Recreation

The resort occupies a scenic stretch of golden-sand beach. Although corals make swimming difficult off the resort's own beach, numerous water activities are available within two miles. Tunnels Beach is a popular swimming beach one mile from the resort, while coral-covered lava tubes and reefs make Tunnels Beach and Kee Beach, 2.75 miles from the resort, prime spots for snorkeling and diving.

The Prince Course offers 18 challenging holes of golf integrated with nature. The Makai Course consists of three nine-hole courses that can be played in any combination.

Hanalei Bay has one of the world's longest and most challenging surf breaks; winter is the high season for surfers. Anini Beach, 12 miles away, is one of Kauai's top spots for windsurfing, as is the more challenging Haena Beach, 1.75 miles from the resort. Other popular water activities available near the resort include fishing, rafting, ocean and river kayaking, and sailing.

“Refreshing. Island Treasure. Beautiful Experience”

We're so glad we selected Hanalei Colony Resort for our wedding/family reunion. The drive from the airport provided breathtaking scenery. We arrived Nov. 14th to a beautiful arranged condo, with an amazing view of the ocean. Our wedding coordinator, Shentel thought of everything. The first night we ate at the Mediterranean Gourmet. Their menu is fresh and grown locally. We enjoyed the atmosphere and live music. Wedding day I was surprised with a gift certificate from a thoughtful friend and enjoyed a relaxing massage at the resorts spa. Just what I needed to start the day! It rained most of the day and we were not able to have the ceremony on the beach as planned. Our wedding was still perfect! Shentel and Bridget Clarke (Manulele) our officiant, created a warm, comfortable ceremony at the pools edge. We'll definitely be returning to this majestic lush island and welcoming resort!

“HCR, a great place to stay for hanalei bay kauai”

Very nice setup, quiet, very clean, with very friendly and knowledgeable owners. Folks can save money by buying groceries in Hanalei bay (big save store) and make some of your own meals in the small kitchens each silverware/cups/dishes stocked unit has. All units are mere steps away from ocean/beach. Each unit has wi-fi, no tv (by design).

“Hanalie Colony Resort”

Nice quiet hotel on the beach 5 miles from Hanalei. Clean, well kept and on a beach. No TV or telephone which was good, but good cell phone coverage and wireless internet.

“Remote.”

This resort is close to the "end of the road" on the North Shore of Kauai. It is in a remote location which took about 90 minutes to reach from the airport in Lihue along a narrow road with numerous one-lane bridges. We arrived at night in the middle of a rain storm so needless to say the drive was stressful. However, once we arrived we found the service to be exceptional; the staff want to help you to feel at home and it has a very folksy feel. They provide housekeeping every 3 days. The condos are older (1969) but well maintained. We also enjoyed the pool and jacuzzi as well as a couples massage in the spa. On our departure, we were informed that one of the bridges beyond Hanalei might be closed due to high water/flooding conditions and that "they don't really monitor the other bridges" so those might also not be safe. However, we did make it back to civilization. If you are looking for an adventure and a place that is truly out of the way, strongly recommend. The North Shore of Kauai is gorgeous and worth seeing but remote from other resort areas of the island. Would definitely *not* recommend making this your first stop on arriving to the island especially if taking a flight that arrives in the later afternoon or evening (i.e. flying from the mainland U.S.). Better to do the drive in daylight so you can experience the scenery and not feel rushed to get there.

“Missing a lot of things”

No Air Conditioning, no TV, we stayed there 3 days and no one came to clean the room and they said it gets cleaned every 3 days, wow! Lots of construction. Room was not ready when promised. Overall, not an experience that I will try again.

“The Kauai worth coming back to”

We had no idea what to think of the Hanalei Colony Resort before we showed up, but when it was time to leave, we didn't want to. I have no idea when we'll return to Hawaii, but when my wife said that we could try another place when I said we'd stop first at a grocery store for food (to cook in the kitchen or onsite grill), I set my foot down and told her that it was either HCR or nowhere on Kauai. This was after 2 nights at a spa resort in the Poipu area. What did I not like about HCR? It's quite a drive away from quite a lot. What did I like about HCR? It's quite a drive away from quite a lot. Hanalei is about a 15 minute drive, which provides a nice location for a quiet small town. Ke'e beach is about a 15 minute drive in the other direction, and is an ideal location for sunsets. The condos are large, and having 2 bathrooms were great. But the best part is that everyone at HCR and in the surrounding area are the nicest people I've met (plus, they're real, unlike those I've dealt with in the service industry elsewhere in Hawaii). We loved Java Kai's for breakfast & coffee (in Hanalei), though we did enjoy every place we ate. We also loved activities at the Princeville Ranch. Every beach we found in the area was great. We sampled offerings from the onsite restaurant, spa, and art shop/coffee shop. Each was great!

“Off the beaten path in Paradise!”

Hanalei Colony Resort is near the end of the road on the north shore and though a bit of a drive, it is well worth it. It is quiet and picturesque and has a beautiful beach just outside your door. The restaurant on the property was fabulous. I can't wait to go back to this little slice of paradise.

“Not impressed at all!”

Was not impressed with Management. We were booked for 4 nights, only stayed 2 because management would not move us from a very bad situation. There are regular people who rent these units by the month. We experienced a night of loud, drunk behavior from such a group. There are no windows, you have shutters and screens. Unable to block out any noises. We wanted to stay here for a really quiet get away. WRONG. Loud and obnoxious behavior way into the middle of the night. People running around outside our bedroom at 3 am. Not relaxing at all. Bed comfort was horrible. Old mattresses and cheap generic dollar store pillows. Bed comforter had yellow stains on it....it was so gross. Could not wait to leave ASAP. Pictures and description are deceiving.

Area recommendations
We moved to the south shore on the 3rd night.
Getting there
About an hour drive from the airport.
Getting around
Really need a car to move around.
Shopping
None.
Dining
They had one establishment on grounds for dining. Did not eat there.
Outdoors or beach
Beach was very hard to walk on...a lot of rock.

“Not for me”

While the hotel is a nice change from luxury, the rooms leave much to be desired as I purchased a 2 bedroom condo and they were just shoji screens and our bedroom door screed didn't even work so there was no point in having a room. I did like the staff, the restaurant, the location and the coffee from the gift shop. If you can get them to give you a room in Bldg 1 on the ocean you'll have a great view but don't pay attention to any of the pictures; that photographer was good.

Area recommendations
Princeville, close to north shore of Kauai but without the one lane bridges that can get backed up and there are better resources available in Princeville.

“Wonderful”

Hanalei Colony Resorts is the perfect place to stay! Not only are the condos fabulous but they have a beautiful pool area and gas and charcoal grills open for all guests to use. The location and views are absolutely stunning. We couldn't have imagined a more perfect place for a honeymoon! Everyone working there was also incredibly kind and helpful. We will definitely stay there again.
