“Can't wait to go back!!”
We stayed at this resort for 8 nights and it was amazing. Everyone made us feel so welcome from the moment we arrived.. We were given a tour of the resort and our room! By the second day they were calling us by name.. They gave us great advise on places to see and things to do. We will definitely stay there again the next time we visit Kauai! We would highly recommend this resort as a fabulous place to stay.
“Nice, but not our style (nor anyone's we know)”
The apparent concept behind the Koa Kea is to provide a stylish spa resort hotel. The first problem is that we weren't looking for a stylish spa resort while in Hawaii. But if that's the only issue we had, I wouldn't be so disappointed with the Koa Kea. When it comes to spa resorts, I expect the concept to be omnipresent. But, I didn't even find a day spa here. You will be greeted by mandatory valet parking (even though it's "free," it almost was enough to make me cancel my reservation). They'll then walk you through the hotel's offerings (pointing out the L'Occitane beauty products, nightly turn-down service, and daily Fiji water delivery), but the real offerings turned out to be more sparse than those of the local Howard Johnson's. If you want to use any of the hotel offerings, you'll need to pay out your teeth. If you want to use a lounger near the pool, that'll cost you. If you decide to use their concierge service, you'll be paying a huge markup (just don't expect them to be knowledgeable: their concierge told me Kauai didn't have snuba anymore, though I found 2 companies on the internet 5 minutes before talking to them. When pressed, their response was that since Koa Kea doesn't work with them, they don't know them... But me, not a local can find better on google?). The bed comfort level? Camping in a sleeping bag was more comfortable. The people are nice, and want to help, but we just didn't care for the insincere veneer.
“Loved it!”
We stayed at the Koa Kea for our wedding and honeymoon recently and absolutely loved it! The staff was wonderful, the room was clean and the beds were so comfortable. Loved the intimate feel of the hotel and that it was so close to the beach, stores and restaurants. Enjoyed the restaurant, especially for breakfast and the eggs benedict. Dinners were a little pricey ($36 for 3 scallops without a side dish) but that would be our only complaint. The staff was so helpful and they even sent a 1/2 bottle of French Champagne for our wedding night. We would definitely stay here again.
“Lived up to and Exceeded our Expectations”
We selected this hotel because of the many positive comments from travelers who stayed there previously and because of its location on the south shore, which receives less rain than the north or east coast of the island. I must say we really didn't expect it to live up to its glowing comments, but we can honestly say it is one of the best hotels we've ever experienced. All the staff are competent, attentive, and genuinely friendly. The management screened them well and hired top-notch people, who really like other people. The quality of service is outstanding--something that is hard to find in this commercial day and age. The faciliites were very nice and well-maintained. It was a good location, although meals there (indeed, most places in Kauai were expensive); that's the only expense we underestimated. If you go on the meal plan, breakfast is included and is very tasty and low key. The environment is extremely pleasant, and there are other good restaurants near by or within an easy drive. Gratuities are included in the meal plan, and staff don't look for "extra". We chose to send a letter with a bonus gratuity for all staff when we returned, to express our appreciation for their excellent services. There are other larger hotels, and some may have more services, but we were very satisfied with the Koa Kea and believed it to be outstanding value for the money we spent there. We highly recommend it without reservation for those who prefer quality over "bigness".
“Fabuous retreat”
Great place with views of the ocean - very calm and relaxing. Our room did not have a bath for some reason (most of them do apparently), so if this is something you want worth calling to confirm in advance. Spa looked nice but didn't get a chance to use it as our schedule did not allow. Restaurant decent if somewhat overpriced. Staff extremely friendly and competent.
“Excellent Private Hotel”
We spent 7 days at Koa Kea Hotel and it was fantastic. If you're into boutique hotels, away from the over-the-top tourist trap resorts like the St. Regis or the Grand Hyatt, this is for you. There's nothing wrong with those resorts - St. Regis and Grand Hyatt are fantastic as well, but they represent a difference experience. Koa Kea Hotel is a private, hip hotel probably geared towards singles, young couples or families with no children. It is quiet, but friendly and the design and aesthetics of the hotel are modern - loud floral prints are non-existent. We had an ocean front room and it was REALLY an ocean front - not a view from afar of a sliver of the ocean, but the patio of the room is set right on the ocean front just a few yards away from the crashing waves. It was great walking out onto the patio, sitting on the rattan chairs and seeing the ocean right in front of you. Granted, there is not much privacy there with guests walking along the beach, but nevertheless a breathtaking view every day. We have to commend the wait staff for the morning breakfasts and late night dinners and drinks. They were absolutely wonderful. They were friendly, accommodating and really cared about your comfort. It's common to find each of them chatting it up with guests and really getting to know you. In the evening, Laura was a blast. The best part of this hotel were the staff - all of them. If we ever come back to Kauai, we would repeat and come back to Koa Kea!
“Loved the Koa Kea”
This was such a terrific trip for us. We loved the Koa Kea property and staff. The location is right on the beach, with lots of access and room to walk the surrounding areas. Everything is available for rentals that you might need for the beach. We really enjoyed bartenders Jim & Jamie and Jessica in the restaurant. They and everyone else was so pleasant. We will definitely be back.
“Would return on our next trip to Kauai !”
This little gem of a "Boutique Hotel" is nestled between two large time-share complexes on Poii-pu beach. The large, surrounding complexes offer a stark comparison of what we did not want in a hotel with it's crowds, screaming youngsters and constant noise. The Koa Kea was the oasis we were looking for when we returned exhausted from daily activities. Did I mentioned how graceous the staff always was!
“Looking forward to go back”
We are very pleased with the stay, the staff very very friendly and helpful. The only complaint was the size of our rooms were smaller than expected and since we book and pay for three persons in a room, we would much rather have two queen size beds or a king and a sofa bed or roller away. It was very uncomfortable to share a full size bed.
“Wonderful hotel experience.”
This is a quiet luxery hotel with all tne usual amenities and more. The staff will do everything to make your stay a very comfortable and memorable one.
