    Dining

Plantation Gardens Restaurant - Hailed as one of Hawaii's best, this spacious restaurant occupies much of the Kiahuna Plantation's original manor house. The manor was a 1930 wedding gift to Alexandra "Sandie" Knudsen and Hector Moir from her father, who inherited Hawaii's first (1835) sugar plantation from his parents. Walls display photographs chronicling plantation history. Under ceiling fans, dining is inside or on a wraparound veranda overlooking gardens and ponds. Wood floors and big wicker chairs evoke an earlier era and slower-paced atmosphere. The shaded bar has its own veranda. Diners are attracted by inventive, contemporary Hawaiian fare featuring local fish and other items.

“have been there twice in 14 months love it there”

we love to stay at poipu beach we love this resort traffic is low in that area and it is centurally located to alot of the activities there would like to go once a year if possible and stay there.

    Area recommendations
poipu beach is great close to everything 20 minutes from airport.
    When to go
we went last Oct. we had alot more daylight hours this year we went in Dec and it got light later and dark earlier so we lost about 4 hours of daylight otherwise it was great eather time. Dec is also whale watching time we saw 2 it was a little early to see alot what would be mid Dec to march.
    Getting there
getting there from Wis we prefer to not have a direct flight it is about 9 hours from Chicago do transfers and get off the plane its well worth it.
    What to pack
shorts, tanktops, swimsuit, and light coverup tennis shoes and flip flops that is what we always take.
    Must see
get a car and drive the island it is beautiful get a map and go.
    Outdoors or beach
all the beaches are very nice stop at them also the waterfalls are very nice.

    “Paradise Found!”

Kiahuna Plantation Resort (Outrigger) the most beautiful and relaxing atmosphere! Everything one needs to satisfy needs in the rental unit. We grocery shopped the first day on arrival, ate exactly what we wanted, when we wanted it and saved hundreds of dollars that could be used for other activities! Lovely beaches within steps, swimming pool with slide and tennis courts, shopping across the street, inexpensive car rentals allowed Island exploring and so many outdoor activities that would please any taste. We will go back to the same resort at our first opportunity! Aloha

    Area recommendations
Poipu area for all the reasons listed above.
    What to pack
Pack two swimsuits per person...one will always be wet...hard to put on, feels yucky. Need only cotton shorts and shirts... washing facilities on property and easy to do...pop the clothes in while you play at the beach...go back to laundry room, pop into dryer, another hour in the surf or on the beach. Easy! If you're looking to go "clubbing" (which we didn't) you'll have to ask someone else's opinion on what to wear...many buy local fashions, mumus, aloha shirts, but most folks looked like they were dressed for any beach community on the mainland. We brought tennis shoes for exploring the island, but during short trips, wore sandles...very important to make sure footwear is comfy...don't buy new stuff to wear on this trip. Might want swim shoes of some type as coral/rocks in ocean floor can cut. Some units have snorkle gear and swim fins, but inexpensive to rent on site. Less is better, with the exception of waterproof sunblock...protect yourselves while having fun!
    Dining
Can't say enough about going to Big Save (on Kaui...close to Kaloa) to buy groceries... be ready for some sticker shock, but a fraction of what it would be to eat in local restaurants. We spent $198 for groceries for our week. So lovely to return to your unit, have a cocktail and some pupus (appetizers) eat dinner in the comfort of your own unit, breakfast on your own lanai, lunch and a break from the sun under the fan in your dining room. With children, eating in your own unit is a must...will save you at least a thousand dollars over the week!!!! Truly a week in Paradise!
    Comment from the hotel's management
Mahalo for your positive review. Outrigger Kiahuna is definitely a good place for families. Hope you are able to come back in the near future.

    “Good Standard Condo”

Outrigger Kiahuna Plantation is a good value at a very good location for Kauai. This facility is not new by any means, so don't come expecting brand new shiny digs. However, the grounds and unit are well maintained, the staff is helpful and friendly and the location is excellent. The beach isn't the best for swimming, but a good swimming and snorkeling beach is a five minute walk away and you can do it from the beach. Poipu is a good middle ground for easily heading west to Waimea Canyon or north to Princeville / Hanelei. Units do not have air conditioning, but it is not a problem at all. We had upper-80s heat all week, but there was a constant sea breeze that flows through the units because of louvres and screens on the lanais and front doors. If you want to go condo in Kauai, this is a good choice.

“Individually owned units, subject to maintenance at anytime”

We really enjoyed the hotel, and the staff was amazing. The only problem for us was that each unit is individually owned. So, when we were staying in our room, an upper unit was being worked on, unbearable loud. We asked how long this would last, and was quoted all week, nothing on the weekends, and nothing after 5 pm. We then asked for a new room. My only suggestion, if you are going to stay longer than the weekend, ask the staff if there is any maintenance scheduled. Great place to stay however. Another issue, the property has two different, and differently owned registration areas. It was a little confusing, until I tried to pick up our room keys from the wrong registration desk.

    Area recommendations
Souvenirs are really cheap at Walmart in Lihue. The shirts and nuts were a few dollars cheaper there. We did ziplining and a tubing excursion. Both were awesome and filled with beautiful scenery. It was recommended to head up to the north side of the island because that's "where it's at." We stayed primarily in Poipu Beach, and had an amazing time!

    “Great resort...amazing setting”

Accommodations were great. The room was comfortable and clean. The grounds are beautiful. Poipu is not my favorite part of this spectacular island and the Kiahuna Plantation beach and surrounding beaches are too small and crowded. It is convenient for traveling to the rest of the island, which is completely worth exploring.

    “Pleasant stay on Kauai”

This is the second time I've stayed at the Outrigger Kiahuna Plantation and have been extremely pleased. The resort is well maintained and the service is great. The beach is just foot steps away and is great for the entire family. The setting is as the name states, plantation, which is completely tranquil and amazing. Having the kitchenette adds flexibility and cost savings by avoiding buying each meal at restaurants. Although the units don't have AC the louvered windows and screen doors provide natural ventilation which is more than adequate. I definitely would recommend Kiahuna Plantation to everybody that doesn't require a small over-price hotel room. A great value and convenient to nearby restaurants and shopping.

    “Paradise without Roosters!”

Loved this condo. Close enough to beach that quiet breezes keep the place cool and comfortable day and night. Unit was clean but dated. OK furniture, nice art, decent interior lighting. Light switches in odd places. Noisy exhaust fan in bath sink/make-up area and not in toilet/shower room. Shower head set at 5', too low for tall guest. Shower hot/cold valve reversed: right is hot - left is cold. No wireless internet. High speed cable (Cat 5) 12-15 feet in length, must be used at dining room table or kitchen counter. Tripping safety hazard during meals. Smallish (15') flat screen TV with lots of channels and DVD player. 3 of 4 burners on kitchen stove worked intermittently requiring constant monitoring and adjustment. Toaster burned toast and needed replacement. Mud wasps and bees were nesting in screen door housing and were quickly eradicated by a maintenance man. Grounds are well kept but dark at night. Pathways from parking area, gas BBQs, and unit's stairs are under-lit. Guest must remember to 'turn-on" exterior light if return is after dark. Automatic lighting would aid in safety and inserting card key in dark. Lanai is 3/4 covered and spacious. Nice table and four chairs with better "garden view" than "partial ocean view". Railing blocks lounge chair view but is OK for sunning. Close beach access and reasonable walk (1/4 mile) to local shopping and restaurants. Grounds relatively free of chickens and roosters!!!! Restful sleep!

    Area recommendations
Lots of good restaurants. Grocery shopping limited to small local markets. Sticker shock for Mainlanders! Particularly milk products and cheese. Local farmer's markets provide excellent fruits and vegetables. There are "big box" stores in Lihue 10 miles or 20 minutes away. Beach services are good, towels and snorkel gear are cheap. Snorkeling and body surfing is good.

“Very good value for the price.”

My whole family went on this vacation. We occupied three separate rooms and the hotel put us in three adjoining rooms which made it very convenient for us to visit each other. The hotel and grounds were very well kept and the staff was very friendly and helpful. Since out flight out did not leave until 9 PM we were allowed to occupy one of the rooms until 6 PM at no additional charge. My two negative comments were: I wish the pool was a bit nicer and more convenient and 2. I had a zipline already reserved prior to going to Kauai but the concierge emphatically told me that we should have made reservations at a different zipline company. She convinced me to cancel my original arrangements and go with her suggestion - wrong move. I and my family were very disappointed in the zipline she recommended. All in all, however, we enjoyed our vacation in Kauai very much.

    Area recommendations
The Poipu area is very convenient to shopping and good beaches. It is a good jump-off point to visit the rest of the island.
