The city of Kerkrade straddles the border of the Netherlands and Germany. Split in the middle under the terms of the Vienna Congress, its historical counterpart, Herzogenrath, is on the German side. Easily seen by bicycle, the city houses interesting sites such as Ernestein Castle, built in the 14th century, and Gaia Park, the zoo voted the most beautiful in the Benelux.
