The centre for German shipbuilding, Kiel is also the countrys sailing capital. Kiel Week (last week in June) is one of the biggest sailing events in the world. Attractions in the old town include Kiel Maritime Museum and the 14th century church of St Nicholas with a sculpture by Ernst Barlach in front. The white-sand beach of Laboe, 10 kilometres north-east, has a Naval Memorial and a WWII submarine, now a museum.
