70 degrees north

Posted Apr 8, 2013
Kirkenes is just south of Norway's North Cape near the Russian border. I was there at the begining of spring April1-2 2013. It was georgeous, I was told I was lucky-no endless darkness of winter or mosquitos and black flys of summer. The Auroa Borealis was worth the trip. The hotel will also arrange dog sledding (winter# and king crab fishing #all seasons# I really liked the friendly staff, the delicious reindeer filet in the dining room, the walk in shower in the bathroom. The view of the harbor was lovely. I only wish that the hotel #and the rest of northern Norway) would keep the ice off the stairs.

Large Rooms with a Sea view

Posted Jan 16, 2013
Pros: Big, modern rooms
Cons: Pricey restaurant
Location: By the sea not far from the centre of town
The rooms are the largest I've experienced in Scandinavia. The hotel is new and hence all the finishes are modern and not worn. It's location by the sea is 2 blocks from the centre of town, but has an unhindered view of the Barents sea.

Shock, horror at mini bar bill

Posted Dec 22, 2012 on Hotels.com
The hotel was smart, clean and comfortable for an overnight stay. However, I was very shocked by the mini bar bill for a 50cl bottle of water and a bar of chocolate. It is usual for hotels to include a price list when drinks are not complementary, but there was no price list in the mini bar. This negated any advantages of staying at the Thorn Hotel.

Comfortable rooms, friendly staff & a goosd breakfast. Whilst the location is on the water front with a great view of the fjord, the area is typical of small industrial port towns -induistrial buidlings etc, rubbing shoulders with hotels. Kirkenes is a border/frontier kind of town, not too much to attract the casual tourist, but if your going for outdoor adventures- husky sledding, winter camping etc then their are a few good operators to look after you. We were their in late November so experience only a few hours of twilight before the sun properly set, so it all seemed a little bleak with the only attractions a few cafes and bars.

Despite arriving at midday, the room I had booked was not available and I had to compromise the facilities I required. Specifically I lost the jetted bathtub which I had been looking forward to during my two night stay. Thon Hotels did not offer me any sort of discount to compensate me for their error (or was it just another example of operational processes which are not sympathetic to customers). Thon need to ask themselves why a room I had pre-booked and prepaid wasn't available to me - I could understand this situation at 10 o'clock at night but at midday! I don't think they care.

Well situated and quiet

Posted Oct 28, 2012
Pros: A good situation and clean
Cons: Poor restaurant service
Location: Easy access to airport and harbour by coach. An easy stroll to the city centre
We arrived late but had already informed the hotel. At 21.00 we had a comfortable hour to order and eat a light dinner but the service was extremely poor. A waiter came for our order before we were ready and then disappeared. Over the next 10-15 minutes two other waiters couldn't answer simple questions about the menu because they were only trainees. Reception was unable to assist so we settled for a basic dish. When the original waiter finally reappeared his excuse was that he had important matters to attend to. This was our first night of a week in Norway and we had hoped to start by sampling something typically Norwegian. No chance of any help in that direction at this hotel. To give the chef his due, the food, when it arrived, was excellent. Pity the restaurant staff weren't up to his standards.

Pleasant introduction to our Hurtigruten cruise. The staff even laid on the Northern Light Show but only just seen as mid September. EVening meal was the best lamb I have ever tasted and that includes wonderful Welsh lamb too.thank you for a good send off to our cruise.
