The room is quite standard japanese hotel size. The hotel provides a public bath but its shared by males & females with scheduled time slots for each gender. Because the hotels main clients are business customers, the majority of the time slots for the public bath are for males, but there's always a sign outside stating who's meant to be using it. Within 15 minutes drive, you will find supermarkets, coffee shops, book/dvd store & chemist.

Quality of building, cleanliness and staff all good.
Sorry to say I didn't enjoy the bed. The 2 pillows were poor. One like a gravel filled bag the other so soft it didn't support my head at all. The cover for the duvet caused it to continually slip off the bed.
V good breakfast quality, quantity and variety.

The Ark Hotel is an excellent value for the single tourist or business traveler. Contrary to other reviewers, I found the staff courteous, polite, and helpful. No, not all of them are fluent in English, but you should only expect this in a 5-star establishment. Mutual respect goes a long way in bridging any communication gap. Breakfast is a combination of traditional Japanese dishes and Western fare, and there are many choices that should satisfy almost all tastes. If breakfast is not included in your quoted room rate, coupons can be purchased at the front desk for 1000 Yen each, which is much less expensive than a visit to the local Starbucks. At least one cab is always on duty outside, and the fare to/from Kumamoto station is about 1200 Yen. City bus stops are also nearby.
