“very nice place”

The hotel itself was very nice and the staff was helpful and gracious. my only negative comment is that the hotel is kind of "out of the way" . Nothing was easy walking distance from the hotel...There is small "mall" area nearby but that was it. I would stay there again but you will definitely need a vehicle...

I was at the mercy of tour guides and shuttles... I can not give a response to this question.

Getting around

The "tavis" are not the American type, more like mini vans that make short shuttle trips... They do have " private shuttles" the american type taxis, but they can be rather expensive... If you are brave enough to rent a car remember they drive on left side of the road and driver is on right side of vehicle...

“Near Convention Center”

Beautiful hotel, good service and good dining room. Across the street from the convention center. Not a good location for beach access or waterfront or local restaurants.

“Hilton Durban South Africa”

I strongly recommend this hotel to other travelers. It is close enough to the beach and not too far from the downtown shops. (I strongly recommend that travelers be accompanied when walking downtown. However, walks to the beach are very safe.) The hotel restaurant offers excellent breakfast and a plentiful dinner buffet featuring some Indian dishes. The restaurant offers a deep discount on food one night of the week plus "bottomless draft beer", with unlimited refills for one price every night. I have also tried the lounge (bar) and the fitness center and found them to be of exceptional quality and very well maintained.

Area recommendations

The entire beach area, the surrounding townships, Gandhi's Phoenix Settlement, Ohlange Institute (where Nelson Mandela voted in 1994), Inanda Seminary, Pavillion Shopping Center, Gateway Shopping Center, and the uShaka Marine World.

“A great hotel, but only for conference goers”

The hotel is attached the Durban Convention Centre and is very convenient for convention goers but is in a bad part of town and everything else is a car drive away.

Area recommendations

Ushaka Marine World to see shark tanks and other marine animals in a theme park emvironment, includes dolphins but don't expect Orcas.

Getting around

You MUST have a rental car as there does not seem to be aby other way of getting around and if you walk on the street you will likley be mugged or worse!

“Ideal location in Durban”

Strongly recommended and excellent value for those who want a five star rest during a busy holiday. Easy walk to the beach, city centre and markets. Very helpful staff and the lobby cafe is ideal for a quick meal and drinks when arriving late and tired.

Area recommendations

This location is ideally placed between the city and the beach with easy access from the motorway. Durban is much smaller and safer than the guidebooks imply.
