Ok hotel. Close to lovely Umhlanga shopsPosted Jul 20, 2014
Ok hotel. Close to lovely Umhlanga shops. Not as close to beach as pictures suggest. Decor dated.

Fab hotelPosted May 8, 2014 on Hotels.com
Lovely hotel, easy to find, great location. Good service. Our key card stopped working about an hour after arrivial. The service engineer tried a couple of things to get it working prior to changing the lock. The Service Manager found out that we were outside the room for about 30 minutes whilst the key was being sorted (we were happy to wait); however, he was astonished and offered us a bottle of wine - and a very good bottle of wine it was! Loads of parking available which was very very reasonable. Clean room with a fab view.

Comfortable family hotel in vibrant, nice areaPosted Apr 10, 2014
My husband, I and our 6 and 1 year old stay here for a night or two whenever we visit SA, which we do a lot. The room is comfortable with a small kitchenette and sea view. The best thing about Protea Umhlanga is its location, in a vibrant area near to shops, restaurants and a lovely beach. I've found that Protea hotels are inconsistent, some awful (Hluhluwe) but this one is an excellent ambassador for the brand. Recommended.

Protea Hotel UmhlangaPosted Mar 5, 2014
Pros: Very clean and comfortable. Comfortable bed. Kitchenette in room was very useful. Very pleasant and helpful staff.
Location: Nice beach 5 minutes walk away, fast food, nice restaurants and shops, ATMs, souvenir shops.
Great hotel, in the midst of shops and many restaurants. Good buffet breakfast, although not included in my room rate. No restaurant otherwise but large range outside hotel. As a single female, I felt quite safe walking around the local shops and restaurants until at least 9 pm at night in February. Plenty of security staff around in shopping area outside hotel day and night. Nice view from hotel window. A very pleasant stay.

Take care. Could be a bad experincePosted Jan 13, 2014
Pros: The localization and the breakfast though it was very expensive. The City of Durban, its people and bussiness deserves a Hotel with the same carisma.
Cons: A serious and prfssonal reformulaton. Mainly start with the management and ends up wth the carpets. It is a shame for Sout Afica.
Location: By th Ocean in the middle of a charming cmmercial and tourist block surrund by very nice restaurants and Cafes?! A must go local even if other H
Terrible. The A/C was not working properly which is a big issue during summer. After several claims we end up our staying with the thing not working. Nice attention from staff but no way to get the thing working. We reserved a famliar room and they did not have it. So they were not able to deliver what they promissed and what we have pay for. A shame in a context where there was not other opton in town since it was t last week of December. Terrible.

Comfy bedsPosted Dec 11, 2013 on Hotels.com
Very good, staff excellent, have stayed before. Only drawback is rooms not serviced quick enough, sometimes not until 1330hrs, not good if you want a nap.

Business tripPosted Sep 14, 2013
Pros: I love the location and how close it is to the beach, where you can literally walk for hours.
Cons: I'd say the breakfast is average, nothing outstanding.
Location: There are several lovely bars and restaurants just outside the door, and as mentioned before, the beach is very close.
I have stayed here before and really think highly of this hotel. The staff are wonderful and the rooms are great as well.

Fab!Posted Aug 7, 2013
This is a good quality hotel located on a vibrant street a couple of blocks from a very pleasing beach. It is not super luxurious but is clean and comfortable and the rooms are very big and tasteful. The bathroom is chic, and the addition of a small kitchenette very handy. We travel to Durban recently and always use this hotel as out airport 'base'.

Umhlanga Protea HotelPosted Jul 16, 2013 on Hotels.com
The hotel is superbly located. The security inside the hotel is good as well as in the surrounding fantastic neighborhood. Room carpets are a bit old, though. Cleaness can be improved. Nevertheless when I'll have to return to Durban I will definetely choose this hotel
