Outstanding!!!

Found this hotel last minute for a really short break. What a fantastic place.. I really can't say enough good things about it.. Can't wait to go back.. Only bad thing I will say is that Expedia charged me quite a bit more than I would have if I had contacted the hotel directly.. Please go and stay there it's awesome!!!

Below Par on a 4 day visit

Pros: position in suburb of Durban. Air conditioning in rooms. Fresh and clean, good service staff. Apple tart and cream
Cons: Management communication to guests when changes to daily services are effected
Location: Nice position in suburb of Durban. Good selection of restaurants nearby when no evening food services at hotel.
Room No 9 found to be impractical, bath with hand held shower led to flooded floors. Personal room safe awkwardly positioned to allow safe usage. Room door latch faulty, repaired following day. Ended up asking for another room with decent shower. Room 8 much better when available on day 3. Breakfast buffet on two days only. Inefficient service last two days due to short staff, not helped by management offering any explanation. Did so when we complained of delays. Lighting throughout hotel and inn garden area on the dim side. Neighbours dogs noisy.

Pros: lovely late victorian house with many original features including large rooms. very comfortable.
Location: as above
very pleasant stay and though tucked away on a quiet street, it was only a short trip to morningside and berea where there are plenty of restaurants. breakfast excellent.

BEWARE - hotel will take your money then evict you

Posted Oct 5, 2013 on Hotels.com
We didn't even get to stay. We made a confirmed booking, money was taken then we arrived they would not let us stay. The only staff member was present was a security guard, so we waited over 40 mins for him to contact Sinitta, the manager, who claimed check-in closes as ten. When I asked why we couldn't have a room, she said they were not made up - and there was nobody competent to manage check-in. Also be aware the hotel security has no way of checking which rooms guests are in - which could be problematic if there was a fire. To add insult to injury, Sinitta suggested she was incovenience by being contacted at 1230 at night, oblivious to what it feels to drive all the way from Joburg, wait for 40 minutes, have to pay twice the costs to find a room, wait for credit card to be refunded etc. When I stated they must be in breach of contract for taking bookings they cannot fulfill, Sinitta claimed two websites say check-in is not 24 hours, althought I find no reference to this on the hotels.com hotel page or booking email. Please also be aware that it iextremely difficult to book hotels in Durban as 'walk-ins' - we were told no vacancies at 5 different hotels afterwards, though each was showing availability on hotels.com and other websites. All in all, a terrible experience - we had to pay twice the cost to find somewhere to stay, made to think it was our fault, have lost the cost of the hotel, and incurred delay, stress and hassle which soured our view of Durban unfortunately.

St James at Venice

Posted Sep 30, 2013
Pros: Comfortable, well kept and conviniently located. Breakfast was very good!
Cons: Service to rooms should try and replace used toiletries (towels, shower cap, etc) and provisions such as milk, tea, etc
Location: St James is located a short walk to areas with lots of restaurants and places to chill out. It is also a walking distance from the beach (15 mins)
Apart from the mix up with my reservation, I found the hotel staff very professional and helpful. The rooms were clean, comfortalble and reasonably spacious. The hotel is located a walking distance from the beach area and in a quiet suburb of Durban.

Friendly hotel (minor imperfections - like home!)

Posted Jun 4, 2013
Pros: The staff and the enormous bed.
Cons: Slight smell of damp in the room.
Location: Very convenient for my purposes - close to my parent's home.
The building is a lovely old Durban home with a welcoming entrance. The staff couldn't have been more helpful and friendly. My room was spacious, had everything I needed, wifi was free and the bed was enormous - however the shower was in the room (I've never seen that before) and the room smelled slightly damp. The hotel, although relatively newly decorated, had some areas that could have been decorated to a higher standard and there were small areas that could do with a little bit more maintenance. The breakfast was delicious and it was no problem for them to let me select items from different set breakfasts to put together something I really felt like eating. Nothing was too much trouble for the lovely staff. For me, the positives far outweighed the negatives and I would definitely stay at the St James again.
