“probably one of the worst hotels i ever stayed in”

no way this is a 4 star hotel. it is in desperate need of renovation i felt like i was taken back to the 70s or 80s, the rooms are depressing and the bathrooms a joke (everything out of yellow beige plastic, disgusting). breakfast buffett is below average, very low quality products, for example the fruits they provide are generally out of a can. would not recommend to stay at this hotel, surely there is a better option in kyoto.

“Family of 4 w/ 2 teenagers - August 2010”

Nice hotel, well located and easily reachable from the train station with a courtesy minibus travelling every 30mns. Rooms are spacious, clean and have all amenities; decoration is a bit dated. Overall hotel are more up to date. Staff is courteous and helpful. The hotel is within a short taxi fare of many restaurants and places of interest. The hotel also arranged bicycle rentals for us and this was a lot of fun and very convenient for temple and shrine hopping. Note that there are not very restaurants close by the hotel. Overall, we liked the hotel and would stay there again.

Area recommendations
The ANA has a free minibus pickup from the Kyoto train station every 30mns by the MacDonald, on the back side of the station. The hotel is well located, clean and welcoming. Staff is attentive and friendly. The rooms are a bit dated but otherwise fairly roomy, have the necessary amenities and are very clean. For a city like Kyoto which is probably the first destination of foreigners visiting Japan, there could be a greater effort to translate services in English. Example: - the restaurants in the lower level have menus available by the entrance - in Japanese only. - there was a beer garden on the roof but the sign indicating 'Beer Garden' gave no other details in Engish.
When to go
April-June or Sep-Oct are likely best months. July and August are hot and humid.
Getting there
Train from Osaka takes just over 1 hour.
Dining
Only 2-3 restaurants are close enough to walk to; The rest require taxis but a great deal of restaurants are within a Y1000 taxi fare. KushiKura is a nice Yakitori place about 10mns walking. Very Japanese, friendly but busy - reservations are advised. The hotel can help with that. We had breakfast at the hotel and recommend the buffet over ordering from the menu.

“Great Choice”

The hotel was great and the service terrific. We stored luggage for a few days and when we returned, it was already in our rooms. The dinner buffet is quite good and a lifesaver if one is leaving for Kansai Airport in the early morning. The shuttle to the train station is very convenient. My only complaint is there is not enough lighting the rooms for comfortable reading.

Area recommendations
I would stay near Tokyo Station because it is convenient but I do not know if there is a good hotel in that neighborhood. The Nijojo neighborhood which is where we stayed is not so convenient, but has good local transportation and with the ANA Hotel;'s shuttle, a good second choice.

“Liked it but . . .”

Hotel is great. The shuttle bus is very useful. Also staff is absolutely helpful in making arrangements, like the bus to the airport. But the one area, that they failed in is in their internet access. We had 5 wireless products with us. In order to use all 5, we had to sign up for 5 internet accesses. One access cost about $17. So now do the math for a 5 day stay. After speaking to the front desk, their response was that they could do nothing about it. Otherwise, our stay was very enjoyable.

“Will definitely return.”

The hotel staff is efficient. The location is convenient. The rooms are spacious. The beds are good sized. Flat screen TV. Roomy bathrooms. The Shuttle Bus is great.

When to go
Springtime, March, April, when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom
Getting there
With the JR Rail Pass. From Narita Airport, take the NEX to Tokyo station and then transfer to the Kyoto Shinkansen. From the Kyoto Station walk to the Hachigo exit and watch for the Shuttle bus that takes you to the ANA Kyoto Hotel.
Getting around
The ANA shuttle is very convenient. Take it to Kyoto Station to the trains. There are many subway entrances and exits very close to the hotel.
What to pack
During Springtime, pack some warmer clothing. Jackets. Sweaters. Scarves. Gloves.
Must see
The Heian Shrine is a must see. Also the Fushimi-Inari Shrine was amazing. Nijo Castle is within walking distance from the ANA hotel, beautiful park on the grounds. Ask the hotel concierge for the city map and see as many places as you can during your visit.

“Ideal Place to Stay in Kyoto”

My father and I arrived in Kyoto after staying in Tokyo for a few days, and we were quite tired after travelling a bit in Tokyo (and riding the shinkansen to Kyoto). However, there was no need to worry, since there was a free shuttle provided for us to get directly from the train station to the hotel. This hotel is located literally right across from Nijo Castle, and it's location provides access to several other places of interest, which are mostly within walking distance (in the span of three days, we only had to use public transportaion once). The staff is simply amazing, extremely helpful, and spoke such good english that I never once had to break out my own not-so-fluent Japanese!
