Nice spa, very Japanese experience.Posted Aug 20, 2013
Pros: Baths and traditional room set-up
Cons: More English and better meal set-up.
Location: Lots of onsen in the area and some popular walking tracks. Unfortunately nowhere to swim in the lake nearby.
Clearly more used to Japanese guests, this hotel does some things well and others less so. We stayed for one night to use the onsen (Japanese baths) and see the Otsu firework festival. The building is clean and well-maintained although the decor is dated. a few staff spoke English, most did not. When we checked-in we were taken through procedures by our traditionally dressed host who showed us our room and prepared tea. The room has a low table in the middle which was moved when we were out to make room for the bedding (futons). The baths were very clean and well stocked with product and the family enjoyed the onsen experience. We had booked a set traditional dinner and breakfast. Unfortunately none of the servers spoke any English, the at-table grills/stew flames took forever to cook anything and we never managed to get a glass of water. Tofu for breakfast was not to our taste but that is not the hotel's fault.
