There is absolutely nothing fancy about this hotel but it gets the fundamentals of what you need in a hotel more-or-less right. That makes it a good budget option for Kyoto.
The good things: the location is good, within easy reach of the subway and a couple of attractions -- plus there is an excellent supermarket next door; the room was clean and everything in it worked; the bed was comfortable, and the shower was hot and of decent strength.
The bad things: the breakfast is terrible for Westerners. The same tired cornflakes and croissants made with margarine rather than butter were not pleasant to wake up to after more than a couple of days. The breakfast coffee did not get me started, but thankfully there is a better coffee machine in amongst the lobby facilities. The view from the room was not good. In fact I could see sky, but when I checked in there was a lady at reception claiming that she could just see brick wall.
Overall, a solid hotel that was just lacking in a few small areas.
