“Great Hotel!”

Comfortable, clean, nice hotel, but above all their customer service is 5 stars. We only had 3 days in Kyoto and needed to maximize our time therefore we requested the Concierge's assistance with suggestions on where to go, transportation, maps, time tables for trains and buses, etc. and each time we received the most detailed and accurate information, and particularly we got very good recommendations about the highlights of the city. Both concierges who helped us really made a huge difference in our trip; I do not believe we would have seen and enjoyed so much of Kyoto without their assistance.

Must see
Do not miss Kiyomizu Temple in Kyoto; try to get there with plenty of time to enjoy the sunset - it's absolutely breathtaking.

“Delightful stay”

Our stay at this hotel was very nice. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The room was tastefully decorated, spotless and very spacious for Japan. We received an English language newspaper every day. The soaking tub in the bathroom was a really nice feature after being out touring all day. As stated in other reviews, the location is not the most convenient but the shuttle bus does pretty much make up for that. The bus was spacious, clean and comfortable. It runs like clockwork and you can get anywhere from the subway station where it drops you off. There is even a 7-11 right there with an ATM. The restaurants in the hotel are very expensive. We treated ourselves to dinner there one night at "Fairie" and the food and service were very good. We solved the breakfast issue by shopping each day for breakfast items. There is a small refrigerator in the room, a tea set and a few dishes. There are wonderful bakeries and small stores in almost every subway and train station. We did not use the pool so I can not say how it was. There is a fee for using it. I would most definitely stay at this hotel again if we return to Kyoto.

“Very poor hotel, I do not recommend”

The carpets were dirty and old (in the common areas and the room), the furniture in the room was dated, the restaurant was being renovated (therefore it was closed) and it is in the middle of a little neighborhood not close to anything except the Imperial Palace (which was not very exciting). The staff was excellent but the hotel overall was very poor. No shuttle to anywhere except a close-by subway station, no decent restaurants close by (which is bad considering theirs was closed). What was worse is that the tour company that I was referred to did not even pick up there (as they do at other major hotels) because they said they were "too far away" Overall this was nowhere near a 4 1/2 star hotel as advertised!

Area recommendations
I would recommend hotels near the Kyoto Station. It is downtown, near quite a bit of shopping, restaurants galore, easy to get nearly everywhere, and the tour companies pick up from that area directly. I heard nothing but good things from the other persons on my tour about the Kyoto Station area and its hotels. MUCH better than the Brighton.

“Wonderful hotel in quiet neighborhood setting.”

The Kyoto Brighton is a clean, comfortable, attractive hotel with a friendly, efficient staff. My non-smoking room was spotless and large with a well-stocked bath/shower room. Unlike other places I've stayed, I didn't have to endure smoke-filled hallways on the way to the elevators or in the lobby. The young women at the Concierge desk were pleasant, extremely helpful, and spoke excellent English. I also enjoyed the hotel's neighborhood location, with easy access to very good small restaurants and an excellent French bakery. The area was safe and welcoming. I had no worries about walking alone after dark to a friend's house in the area. I have already recommended the hotel to others traveling to Kyoto.

“Nice but inexcessible”

The room was lovely, comfortable and clean. The hotel is located away from just about everything so you needed to travel to find a restaurant or get to many of the sights. The restaurant was just ok.

“Terrific hotel! Planning to go back.”

The Kyoto Brighton hotel exceeded our expectations. The service was excellent, the staff professional and friendly. Our room was large with a seating area, work/desk area, a gorgeous spa-like bathroom and two full size beds. Everything was spotless. The amenities are very nice, I especially liked the bathrobes and bath salts. The mini bar even included tea and tea wisks for tea ceremony! An English language newspaper delivered every morning. We never ordered room service so I can't comment on that. We did eat breakfast in the western style restaurant every morning or in the lobby cafe ( which we preferred since it was a smaller meal and they left a pot of tea with a tea cozy rather than just a cup). We found the surrounding area to be a little out of the way of main attractions, except for the Imperial Palace which was a must see for us. Taxis are always outside the hotel and we went everywhere in them. a lovely "home" to return to at the end of long days site seeing!

“Kyoto Brighton Hotel”

Kyoto Brighton Hotel is a great hotel with incredible service quality. I have stayed at many 5 star hotels around the world, and in Japan over the years, but service quality at the Kyoto Brighton Hotel cannot be any better. The downside is the hotel is far from the centre of Kyoto, although the hotel runs a regular shuttle bus. The second small downside is the building itself is not a good looking venue... but the rooms are in great shape. However, the outstanding quality is the staff. No English language problem. This hotel must have great people managers. For a Japanese hotel, the rooms (we stayed in a king size bedroom) are very large. Will stay there again when next visiting Kyoto.

Area recommendations
Kyoto is the world's capital of Japanese gardens and temples. Pure and simple. As many of Kyoto's temples are north-west of the city, the Kyoto Brighton Hotel is well located -- a bus ride takes less than 20 minutes to reach these.
Must see
The Saihoji Temple (Moss Temple) is a must-see. You have to write to the temple at least one week before (from overseas is OK) and ask for permission to visit. Google it and find out more about it.
