August 2014 - 5 nights

Posted Aug 16, 2014
We stayed at the Okura for 5 nights during an 18 day vacation in Japan. They gave us a free room upgrade. The location cannot be beat as it is walking distance to the Gion area. They have a free shuttle to and from the Kyoto Station every hour which we used every day. From the Kyoto station you can rent bikes, take train to Osaka, Kobe, and Nara, etc.. Service and room was impeccable.

Great Location and Decent Hotel

Posted Aug 15, 2014
Pros: Location. Superb Location. If you are a runner or like to take walks, it is ideal as right along the Kano River and also near the old parts of Kyoto
Cons: Make it a bit more kid friendly.
Location: Definitely an ideal location for seeing Kyoto. The Ritz Carlton even better but didn't look at that one.
If you have kids, you might want to look at a different hotel. Pool is only for those 18 and above. The origami birds on the beds upon arrival was a nice touch but that's about it for kids.

Charming

Posted Aug 9, 2014
Pros: The ambiance is soothing after uphill and downhill temple visits and shopping, the staff is topnotch, the elevators are efficient - a great hotel.
Cons: It is already refined and Japanese as Japanese could be - there is no need to tinker with procedure, decor or staff development.
Location: Convenient location: subway beneath, taxis at the door and covered shopping just across the street - accessible by a underground route too.
Kyoto Hotel Okura was an excellent choice and would stay again and again. The room was quiet, peaceful and comfortable and very, very clean.

Excellent service, well-located

Posted Aug 6, 2014
Pros: Our room was large, clean, and comfortable, with a huge bathroom (separate shower and soaking tub), plus free wifi. Service throughout was impeccable
Cons: Our non-smoking room still smelled of cigarettes from the smoking rooms. Okura did not offer an in-room air cleaner like our Tokyo hotel.
Location: The hotel is a short walk from the Gion District and Nishiki Market.
Since we only had two nights and one full day in Kyoto, we appreciated several conveniences offered by Hotel Okura that allowed us to get around more easily and maximize our time there. The hotel not only has a free shuttle from Kyoto Station to the hotel, they also have a welcome lounge right by the main station entrance. We had the option of waiting there for the next shuttle in comfort (with refreshments and free wifi). Rather than wait 30 mins for the next shuttle we parked our very large bags there while we had lunch and browsed some shops. If we had wanted to begin sightseeing immediately we could also have had them transport the bags to the hotel (for a small fee) and followed to the hotel later. The concierge was extremely helpful in putting together our itinerary for the day and planning our subway and bus routes. The subway stations a few short blocks away and several bus lines that stop across the street made it so easy to get to all our destinations. The hotel itself felt very luxurious and the staff was quite gracious.

Great hotel but smells like cigarette smoke

Posted Jul 31, 2014
Even the non-smoking rooms smell of smoke (the hotel has a central atrium that seems to facilitate this, and it seems to get especially bad in the morning). They were nice and moved us to a second non-smoking room, which was a bit better on the smell, but was still not good. If you are sensitive to smoke I would avoid this hotel--if not it's great (helpful staff and conveniently located).

Classy Kyoto Hotel

Posted Jul 17, 2014
Pros: Staff is wonderfully welcoming and competent.
Cons: Better access to the gym--both times and prices
Location: Near shopping and tourist sites downtown and right adjacent to the picturesque Kamo River.
This hotel is located in a prime location in Kyoto. It is one of the classiest hotels in the city, with an incredible staff and chic-ly updated rooms.

Great Location

Posted Jul 4, 2014
Pros: Very friendly and helpful concierge services available. Location, location, location.
Great location near the Kyoto shopping arcades and the Gion district (where the Geisha can be seen). Tons of fabulous nearby restaurants. Couldn't have been better. Very helpful and friendly staff.

Excellent hotel, convenient, comfortable

Posted Jul 4, 2014
Pros: Location, condition of room, many pillows and choices
Cons: Hotel shuttle inexplicably stops running at 18:00, and does not connect well with Airport Limousine. Also staff are professional, but a bit cold.
Wonderful stay. When possible, I like to stay at the Okura for its comfort and convenience

The restaurant on the top floor is superb

We really enjoyed our stay and would thoroughly recommend this. Just be sure to get your permit for the Imperial Palace before trying to get in.
