Aging but classy and comfortablePosted Jul 20, 2014
Big, comfortable rooms, very well kept. Good bathrooms. For a family of four we had to get two twin rooms, not uncommon in Japan. We asked for and got adjacent rooms but there was no interconnecting door. We also asked for and got non-smoking rooms and they were genuinely free of any smoke smell, not something you can always rely on in Japan. Useful free shuttle between the hotel and Kyoto station, with a stop in Gion on the way if you want to go there for dinner or to shop. Note though that the shuttle is heavily used and at the hotel there is often a queue for it. Also you cannot get on in Gion, only off. The Keage subway station is about 3 minutes walk from the hotel entrance - very handy, although we often found ourselves transferring after only two stops to the north-south Keihan line. A hotel near a Keihan line stop would be worth considering in Kyoto. The hotel has a pool (two actually, one indoor and one out) but you have to pay extra to use it - 550 yen per visit for an adult, less for kids but for a family to have a swim it adds up. Personally I find this irritating, I think if you're staying in a hotel you should have free use of the pool. This is the only reason I haven't given the facilities full marks. Meals are very expensive if you don't have a meal plan included in your room rate - ie over $10,000 yen for breakfast for 4.

Beautiful traditional Japanese roomPosted Jul 7, 2014
The traditional Japanese rooms were a bit of a walk from the main building, but were gorgeous. Staff was friendly with very good English. Easy walk from subway station.

Comfortable place to come back toPosted Jul 7, 2014
Didn't end up taking advantage of much of the ammennities... Cost extra for gym and the hot tub wasn't too hot so used the rooms tub instead to soak my sore feet every day (from walking so much). That said this hotel is in a pretty area very close to subway station and a nice area. Convenient store on first level was used frequently and not overpriced from another place...room was a perfect four star hotel.. Double bed was a king and shower tub was great! Not much in walking distance for food but there was a place for okonomiyaki five blocks down (closed on Mondays) that was fabulous! We like being off the beaten path and so we liked it here! Shuttle drops you off a couple places too which was helpful:-)

Excellent hotel but room for improvementPosted Jun 30, 2014
Excellent service from the moment you walk in. Staff speak decent english and make you feel like home. Rooms and view were great. We had a city facing view which was amazing but overlooked a cemetery which was a bit creepy. Only negatives are that you have to pay to use to the pool and gym facilities, and you have to fight other guests to get on the shuttle bus which takes you to the city as it is small and cannot fit many people. Need a bigger bus or more buses. We would stay again of we came back to kyoto.

Good city hotel.Posted Jun 30, 2014
Pros: Good location
Cons: More variety in Club food
We had the hotel arrange airport transfers and despite our flight being 2 hours late they had made sure we were still met on time. Thumbs up there! Room was bright and comfortable (as in many Japanese hotels had a Superloo!) staff friendly and efficient helping with tours of Kyoto and use of the bus system. One quibble- we paid for the Club Level but found the breakfast very Japanese (all vegetables!) and the evening cocktail hour was "serve yourself", not good if you want to try anything new! That aside the hotel was lovely- don't miss the in grounds bird watching trail into the hills above, beautifully Japanese.

Large rooms, but watch out for hidden costsPosted Jun 28, 2014
Pros: Large rooms - staff - bike rental
Cons: Yes. dont charge for what all other hotels include like using the gym & pool. Very disappointing. At least make it clear this costs extra when booking
Location: Is about a 30minute walk from downtown but is a nice walk. Philosophers path is near by too. Ideal if you want away from downtown, not ideal if dont.
Great location and staff usual of the level that comes with the Westin. But have to say is old and dated and first hotel ever I have had to pay to use the hotel's gym and pool. This was not on any of the booking info and having these facilities influenced our decision to stay here. Bike rental is great and recommended but hotel doesnt have much else going for it.

Nice hotel with shuttle service to Kyoto stationPosted Jun 27, 2014
Pros: Child friendly and with a shuttle service to and from Kyoto station.
Cons: Concierge not very helpful and most times there was just 1 lady manning the counter resulting in long wait time.
Location: Very near one of the famous Kyoto temples 'Silver', had lunch at a nice little joint just down from the hotel run by a family.
Nice hotel although located a bit far from kyoto station. Has child amenities including pyjamas.

Nice hotel near Higashiyama sightsPosted Jun 24, 2014
Pros: Spacious room and bathroom, nice shower and bed, very helpful stuff, convenience store below hotel is as good as other stores, good location to cycle
Cons: increase frequency of shuttle bus during peak hours (morning 10, 11am for check-out) and night 9pm pricey food in hotel
Location: Ask the stuff for map of restaurants nearby. The area around Nizenji temple serve good yu-tofu (though pricey).
Positive: Superb staff, short walk to Kaege Stn, a good convenience store in hotel, location good for Higashiyama exploration. Thought has been put in to make room stay comfortable through quality bathroom slippers, non-fog mirrors, and warm toilet seats! Negative: There's some confusion over the cost of the use of gym (we were charged though its supposed to be free). Pricey meals in hotel. Limited English or Mandarin channels for TV. Suggestion: Rent a bicycle from the hotel to cycle to some sights or just to explore. Its fun and not as tiring since the bike is an electric bike.

Nice hotel- a little datedPosted Jun 23, 2014
Room size was great and I was upgraded. Bed was comfortable and bathroom had everything you could need. shuttle from the train station is useful on arrival as hotel is not in central location. Location is good as there is a subway 5 mins walk away and Gion area is about 15 mins walk. Outside view of hotel does not reflect the inside, You have to pay to use the gym and pools each time-not good.

Bathroom tiles covered in mould.Posted Jun 17, 2014
We have stayed in traditional Japanese room in Kasuien annex . It is quiet and has a beautiful Japanese garden, we thought it was great until we saw the room. The room was clean but bit tired and worn out, chipped and used. (Certainly does not look like photos.) It was really expensive given the condition. And I was shocked to see the the bathroom. It has tiled walls and they are covered in mould. Location was good but that's about it.
