The room was nice and clean, bed very comfortable. We had reserved 2 rooms originally in which they charged us for 2 breakfast for each room. When we arrived they didn’t have espérate beds in the 2nd room so we rented an additional room and were told that we would not be charged breakfast for that room since we paid for 2 already in the other room. When we went to check out the staff member was not as friendly as the ones that assisted us it might have been that there was a long line of people trying to check in and out not sure but the previous days they had also been busy but they still took the time to go over everything with us. The staff member that checked us out was rushed and seemed impatient with us as I asked questions and tried to explain to her what we had been told about not being charged for the breakfast in the additional room and she stated that everyone has to be charged and if we had already paid for 2 in the other room that can’t be credited to a new room. None the less we ended paying for an additional breakfast for several days without having an additional person. We paid for 5 breakfasts and only were 4 of us.

This hotel was formerly a Royal Hospital and the structure reflects that. There are 4 cloisters in the hotel. The hotel is on the same plaza as the Cathedral, immediately adjacent. The public rooms are attractive and comfortable. Our individual room was somewhat small and plain - about what you get in a 3*. (And the building is so complicated that it took a couple of tries before we could reliably go between our room and the front desk.) Two restaurants - the "coffee shop" restaurant has good food but was quite noisy. The main dining is very attractive and comfortable but the food was mediocre and the service totally disorganized. Front desk staff friendly and helpful. It was tricky to find (google maps didn't quite get us there and we had to ask pedestrians), valet parking. Internet connection was good when it worked, but it kept dropping out. In any case, this is THE place to stay in Santiago de Compostella, and I would stay there again.

This is a wonderful five-star hotel right in the center of Santiago de Compostela. This historical building can be said as one of the oldest five star hotel buildings in the world. All major sites to see are just around the corner from this hotel. Services are excellent, and the breakfast is nice. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here as one of a lifetime experience.

worth staying once
It was very nice as a treat upon the completion of our camino. Way too expensive but worth staying once. Will stay elsewhere on my next camino.

The property is beautiful. There is a feeling that can’t be described. Like stepping back in time. Lovely. So clean and well-appointed. The front desk staff were lovely and accommodating. But the bar staff were rude. But not to other people. We were repeatedly ignored. We wanted more than one beer and a water, but the guy wouldn’t stop when we said ‘perdon’ to ask to order another drink. En español. Or to get a bowl of potato chips that everyone else was given but we were not. After check in, we did not feel welcome in the hotel. We live in Galicia and were there for Christmas with friends. We have stayed there before but we won’t again. I don’t think the staff likes Americans. There are other places at Christmas we can stay. It made me sad.

The best place to stay in Santiago de Compostela.
My wife and I stayed two nights as a 50th Wedding Anniversary present to each other on a 10 day driving journey through northern Spain. Since we have been to Santiago de Compostela before we wanted to stay at this beautiful Parador right in the heart of the city next to the famous Cathedral. Nothing compares with its location, history and it's ambiance. Fabulously beautiful and historic details in the Parador gives one a sense of living in a totally different century with luxury accommodations. We have stayed in a number of Spanish Paradors and each one has its own special historical feeling. We happened to be here during one of the local Carnival festivals and it was so much fun to watch various ethnic groups celebrating in the square right in front of our lodging. Very convenient to the local farmers and fish market where we ate the freshest mussels, razor clams, pulpo and grilled patron chiles ever.
