Interesting, historic hotel.

Pros: The history of the hotel.
Cons: New carpet and repair the stairs with paint, etc.
Location: Close to Reno and Lake Placid. Great for hikers, skiers and other outdoor activities.
We stayed at the beginning of the summer tourist season so the hotel was mostly empty. The room was small and had a sink, because the bathrooms are shared. This was fine because the hotel was pretty empty. The continental breakfast was good but average. Very cool lobby. Needs updating but we enjoyed the history of the hotel and the area. The trains are loud at night.

Like trains stay at Truckee Hotel

Posted Jun 13, 2013
Pros: Location
Cons: The trek to the bathroom
Location: A stones throw from the train line but surrounded by mountains, snow covered in the distance. A short ride to Donner Lake and the museum.
Staff were excellent. I had the European room , i.e very basic. No lift, so a heave up the grubby stairs. No bathroom but a shared toilet/shower room down the landing. A bit of a trek in the middle of the night. No phone, hair dryer or ironing board but toiletries by the bedroom sink with no plug, however the bedding and towels were spotless. Train noise was loud but I didn't mind that. In the centre of town surrounded by mountains and just a short walk to the transit buses and Amtrak and a nice long balcony to sit and watch the world go by. Public buses to Donner Lake and Lake Tahoe. Despite the negatives I enjoyed my stay

Very rustic, no private bathrooms, yucky breakfast

Pros: Historic
Cons: Tiny rooms. Beat up shared bathrooms.
Location: Excellent location in downtown Truckee. Cool restaurant / bar attached to hotel.
Very old hotel. Tiny rooms. Shared bathrooms in hallway only, and in poor condition. Very poor "continental" breakfast; just coffee, apples and plain white bagels with packages of jam and butter. One toaster for entire hotel. The staff was pleasant, however, but did a poor job of providing the "continental" breakfast. The bed was comfortable.

Very noisy & community bathrooms.

Pros: The breakfast was good.
Cons: The noise.
Location: Nice location. The building is beautiful. Walking distance to restuarants, bars & stores, etc. There is a restuarant/bar in the hotel as well.
The hotel was interesting and had a great deal of history. The room we had was very simple. There was no television, no phone, etc. however they do have wireless internet and a sink in your room. The breakfast was good. Staff was courteous and overall the place was nice. However, the noise was unbearable in my opinion from the bar downstairs, which had live and VERY loud music until past midnight and the incessant passing of a train very close by (all night long). Plus, there are community bathrooms and the walls are very thin - allowing you to hear every passing person in the hallway and the never-ending slamming of the bathroom doors. If you are a heavy sleeper and don't mind noise, this hotel will work for you. If you have small children and are light sleepers - seek accomodations somewhere else.

Quaint old west hotel in Truckee. Pros. Comfortable bed, decent continental breakfast included, clean. Cons. Shared bathrooms, excruciatingly hot in summer as no fans or A/C. OMG the nosie! Very close to the train line and those trains run ALL night long. I loved the old time feel of the place but seriously got little sleep the first night.

A comfortable hotel with a frontier look and feel.

To put my rating in perspective, I love staying in old historic hotels; this building is 101 years old, and has the feel of an old wild west hotel. I think there are 2 electric sockets in the entire room, led to by outboard conduits, just like in the good old days. So, it is not a posh 4-star, but it works well, the beds are clean and comfortable, and the bathrooms are just fine. And it is in a great location in downtown Truckee, with lots of restaurants and bars around. The staff is extremely friendly and responsive, too. You have to pay extra for your own bathroom; we are just fine with the community bathrooms. Oh, if you have problems with stairs, you might look elsewhere. But if you don't mind a little exercise, a room on the 4th floor is a workout, and the views are great from up there.
