The good, the bad and the uglyPosted Feb 23, 2014
The history of the old town Las Vegas unfolds at the El Cortez. Rooms and facilities off of the main building are A-OK but don't stay in the vintage rooms above the main casino unless you are a smoker! OMG the cigar and cigarette smoke had a direct channel up the stairs and into our room which itself was non smoking. Room itself was ok although a bit small and definitely a throwback to the 70's but the price was reasonable and we just needed one night until we flew home. Restaurant's were ok and food prices great, but staff didn't go out of their way to be fast or friendly for the most part. Stayed there 8 years ago and had a great time but not sure I would recommend them now.

Very Poor HotelPosted Feb 21, 2014
Pros: Bellhops were kind and helpful.
Cons: I will not recommend this hotel - they need too much improvements.
Location: Freemont has lots to do on this street.
Rooms booked mid january. Got to hotel early; they told us to come back - so walked around town til 3pm (check in at 2pm). Our rooms were no longer available. Got rooms that were NON smoking even tho booked a month in advance for smoking. Rooms were NEVER serviced everyday even tho tags were put in doors to have them cleaned and restocked, had to use same towels and buy soaps, shampoos, etc. Even went to desk and asked for towels - they were going to send up 15 minutes later. Never received. Tub clogged up when showering. Hotel dirty. Rooms looked NOTHING like the pictures they showed on line. They refused to print return boarding tickets because they claimed Spirit shuts down their computers. Service desk personnel were rude - but Bellhop gentlemen were very kind. Never recommend this hotel - poor hotel rating.

Great value hotelPosted Feb 20, 2014
Pros: The food in the Café was a great value and priced at one quarter of the amount you would pay on the strip for nearly the same thing.
Cons: Fridge motor, timeliness of housekeeping.
Location: Near Freemont St, Mob Museum, buses to the Strip.
The El Cortez is a good value hotel within a two minute walk of the Freemont Street experience and the public transit buses that can take you to and from the airport and the Strip. I had a good experience at the El Cortez. The staff was friendly and helpful. I stayed in the Cabana Suites, which was a good choice. I was in a junior suite which was small, but clean and functional. Besides, who goes to Las Vegas to sit in the hotel room? The air conditioner was silent, however the fridge had to be unplugged at night because its motor was loud. My room phone was blocked which nearly caused me to miss a Hoover Dam tour. That issue was resolved right away. I also assumed that housekeeping would be done automatically every day, but I suppose one must hang the sign on the doorknob to indicate that your room needs attention. I won't bother to post pictures of the room as the pictures on Expedia.ca are accurate for the Cabana suites. The area might be a bit sketchy, but there is security around. For Vancouverites, the area was not Main and Hastings, but was like Victoria and Hastings.

El CortezPosted Feb 18, 2014
Located in downtown which was a nice change from the strip but the hotel was older and needs a lot of work. It stinks of cigarette smoke. Even in a non smoking room. If you want something really cheap and have no expectation beyond the basics this hotel will do.

Nice old town feel! Very comfortable and clean!Posted Feb 17, 2014
We stayed four nights. The staff treated us very well and were very helpful. The pavilion could use some updating, but it was clean and we felt safe. The Cortez has good security on staff. There was an argument on the sidewalk outside of the hotel and they were there to break it up in seconds. We felt very safe there. The Cortez offers ample free parking to guests and a secured elevator entry that requires your room key card. They also offered free transportation to and from the airport in a very nice Lincoln Towncar. We really felt like "guests" as opposed to "customers". We will stay again!

Close to old downtown, noise bedroom and dirtyPosted Feb 17, 2014
Pros: Good location in the old downtown.
I was supposed to stay there 4 days, on the third day my bedroom was not clean not even 1 time, I run out of cleaning supplies and water. Does have a good location to old downtown (not the strip), but is also noise. Terrible experience, I checked out one day before and choose to go to another hotel because of this.

good valuePosted Feb 17, 2014
We had stayed 3 nights on the strip but moved downtown for Friday evening because our same room was going to double in price. We paid a bit more to stay in the tower because we heard it was better than the older building. We did not expect much but were pleasantly surprised. The room was large and comfortable. Prices were cheaper downtown and it was a unique experience. The only downside was the loud music outside which went on until 3 am--way past our bedtime!
