Explore miles of hiking trails, join a river cruise and visit a historic farm in the beautiful wilderness of Finland’s largest national park.

Lemmenjoki National Park (Lemmenjoki kansallispuisto) has an abundance of activities for everyone from day-trippers to hikers and those that plan to stay overnight amid inspiring natural landscapes. Follow marked hiking trails, go fishing and marvel at magnificent waterfalls. Watch gold diggers at work, learn about the Sámi people and camp beneath a starlit sky. Lemmenjoki National Park incorporates about 1,104 square miles (2,860 square kilometers) of pristine wilderness in Finnish Lapland.

Zigzagging throughout the park are some 37 miles (60 kilometers) of trails suitable for both hiking and cycling. During the snowy winters these trails are ideal for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. The trails skirt the banks of the Lemmenjoki River, pass through thick pine forests and lead to majestic fells and waterfalls. Knowledgeable naturists can enjoy picking wild berries and mushrooms in the forests.

Travel deep into the park’s heartland on a cruise along Lemmenjoki River. Disembark at Ravadasköngäs Waterfall or continue to the gold-panning area. Speak with the gold diggers to understand the differences between antique and modern-day digging practices. Rent a canoe or rowboat and glide across the gentle water at your own pace. Fish for grayling and trout at the park’s river and lakes.

Walk in the footsteps of the Sámi people at Kaapin Jouni, a homestead established in the 19th century. Visit Matti Musta, a former Sámi dwelling, granary and fishing base. Peek inside the huts at Sallivaara, where indigenous groups once staged winter reindeer round-ups.

Take the opportunity to witness two of the Northern Hemisphere’s most fascinating natural phenomenon. Come in June and July for the midnight sun. Gaze in awe at the northern lights, visible on around 200 nights each year.

During the summer season there are daily bus and taxi services from the Lemmenjoki National Park to Inari. Road access is via the park’s northern and eastern limits. Parking is available at the villages of Njurkulhati and Lisma.

Pick up maps of the park and purchase fishing permits at the Lemmenjoki Nature Centre. Find more information about activities, sights, rules and restrictions on the park’s official website.
