Unmissable due to its striking appearance, the country’s biggest art museum rivals some of Europe’s best.

See paintings, sculptures and spectacular installations that span a vast range of time periods and styles at the excellent Liechtenstein Art Museum. Marvel at works from artists including Depero and Pistoletto and enjoy unforgettable temporary exhibits that have in the past included the works of Andy Warhol and Picasso.

The Liechtenstein Art Museum opened in 2000 and quickly established itself as one of Vaduz’s premier attractions. This is in part due to the building’s stunning exterior. Gaze at the striking façade made almost completely of black basalt stone that shines in the midday sun. In the plaza in front of the entrance, a giant bronze nude by Fernando Botero reclines on a platform, as if sunbathing.

Step inside the building and make your way slowly through three floors of artwork from the 19th century to the modern day. See the abstract efforts of Arp and Willem de Kooning and admire conceptual works and pieces by some of Europe’s finest artists, including Baldessari and Beuys.

Make sure you see the paintings from the collection of the prince of Liechtenstein. These offer a brief venture farther back in time with pieces spanning the Renaissance and into the Romanticism period.

As you come to the end of your visit, head to the café just inside the main door. Enjoy a coffee and pastry or stay for lunch to sample the delicious sushi menu. Don’t miss the gift shop on the way out, where a selection of printed bags and clothes are available for purchase.

The Liechtenstein Art Museum is located right in the heart of Vaduz. It is open from Tuesday to Sunday and has an admission fee. Temporary exhibits often run at the museum and profile renowned artisans from the past and present day. Check online or at the tourism office to find out about upcoming events.
