Excellent hotel in city centre

Posted Aug 25, 2014
Location: As above
Stayed one night only but very enjoyable; staff very friendly and welcoming. Hotel is centrally situated inbetween Lille Flandres and Lille Europe with easy access to bars, brasseries and restaurants. Our room was very clean, bright and surprisingly quiet. Tea/coffee/Nespresso making facilities were available and soda/water/juices were complimentary. All in all a very pleasant overnight stay and would recommend to anyone travelling to Lille - we look forward to going back.

Perfect for exploring Vieux Lille (the old town)

Posted Aug 25, 2014
Pros: Lovely reception staff. Good location for on-foot tourists. Station nearby to travel out to other towns - Ypres one hour away.
Cons: One wall of our room had obviously been damaged in part and plastered over roughly but not finished which gave a poor impression when we first arrived
Location: Take the metro to Roubaix and see the Piscine Art gallery - fabulous and better than the Museé Beaux Arts. Climb the Beffroi for an excellent view!
We stayed for a week in this hotel right on the edge of Vieux Lille and very close to Gare Lille-Europe where we arrived by Eurostar. We walked everywhere from the hotel except for one or two trips on the metro and it turned out to be a perfect base to visit everything we wanted to see. Lots of cafés, bars and restaurants are minutes walk away as well as shops and interesting sights and museums. The staff at the hotel were really professional and helpful, although I wouldn't recommend the room next to the service lift as we were disturbed a couple of early mornings by the unloading of laundry containers. This did not however bother us sufficiently to ask to be moved as the room was very quiet at all other times. Breakfast was very expensive compared to local cafés (17 euros each!) so we ate out each morning. Many cafés served breakfast and Le Pain Quotidien (near the tourist office) was exceptional, serving organic, home-made breads and products. The white chocolate spread was naughty but heavenly! The hotel offer a buffet facility in the evenings where you get your own combination of food and drink, enter what you've had on a honesty 'chit' and can even microwave a meal/warm up some soup as if you were at home, but we found better options in the town centre. Unexpected bonus was the free zoo at the Citadel and the walk around the Citadel itself was a real nature trail - herons, a turtle and rabbits all seen in one circuit!

Perfect hotel for a city break, amazing location

Posted Aug 17, 2014
We stayed at the centre grand balance for two nights over a weekend. Easy to find, the hotel is a 10 minute walk from the Eurostar station. Upon arriving at the hotel we were greated by a friendly receptionist who checked us in promptly. We stayed in a privelidge room, It wasn't a lot more expensive to do this and I would definitely recommend, I believe it included a bigger room plus free soft drinks and a coffee making machine. The room itself was very clean, huge comfy bed and a spotless bathroom with a bath and a shower over the top. the room also had a balcony and french doors which was lovely. In terms of location you are a two minute (no exaduation) walk to the main square and the winding streets of the old town. We stayed in room 401 which backed onto the lift but we couldn't hear a thing.

Great location and modern decor

Posted Aug 5, 2014
Pros: The location is great - walking distance to everything. I also liked the modern decor and clean rooms. Wifi worked well.
Cons: The breakfast at €17 euros seems a bit expensive - go to a patisserie to have an amazing pastry and coffee for €4!
Location: Great location - close to all the main attractions and a short walk to bars restaurants and cafes in the old town. It's a quiet city though!
I stayed here for a summer weekend break, I was supposed to travel with a friend who didn't make it, and upon check in the staff was able to change my room from a twin room to double room so I have a nice big bed to sleep on. Staff was helpful and professional. The room I had was not big, and it had a shower room rather than bathtub but this does not bother me at all. The overall experience was lovely.

easy reach for station and town centre

Posted Jul 5, 2014
Cons: choice for breakfast rather than a set meal and price
Location: the main squares full of cafes, interesting buildings, good shopping, restaurants, old town with narrow streets to wander along,
Hotel Mercure is very easy to reach from the Stations and minutes away from the main town squares. Reception staff was friendly and helpful, lift working and room airy and comfortable although small. A small kettle and tea/coffee making facilities were in the room plus a small fridge. We chose not to have breakfast due to the fixed rates and it would have suited us better if we could have chosen a small breakfast with either croissant or boiled egg as neither of us wanted the full breakfast. Maybe we should have just shared one ! I would go back there or use another in the chain.

Journey to Lille

Posted Jun 18, 2014
Pros: See above.
Cons: We paid for room only. We had one (buffet) breakfast but at 17 euros this seemed expensive so we took our other breakfasts elsewhere.
Location: Very central to museums and galleries and shops and restaurants of which there are a lot!
We wanted to spend some days in Lille, travelling by Eurostar. The hotel is conveniently located close to the city centre and Eurostar station. Although on the street we had no problems with noise and the room was double glazed, air conditioned and with a small balcony. The room was a bit small but for four nights stay this did not matter. The hotel is well equipped and staffed and in an historic building. So, a good choice for us at a reasonable price.
