An OK hotel

Posted Jun 30, 2015
Pros: The staff were very helpful and the pool provided shade / snack food / drink during the day
Cons: Maybe update the décor in the main public areas
Location: Hotel about 10 mins drive from Lisbon. Recommend the tram tours around and about. Also various coach tours which are comfortable and informative
This is a 5-star Portuguese hotel which unfortunately isn't the equivalent of a 5-star English hotel!!!! It has a lot of history and the décor in the main part of the building shows this. Felt the large airy public rooms could benefit from updating a little. Unfortunately the bar was not inviting to sit in - dark with some chairs past their sell by date - it lacked atmosphere and people. Some outside seating with waiter service in the evening would have been a bonus and may have encouraged us to have a pre-dinner drink there. The dinner was OK for one night. On the plus side, although the pool was cold, the area around it provided much needed umbrella/ tree shade. All staff were courteous and helpful. The bedroom was spacious with an adequate bathroom although the mattress was quite hard. We tended to eat out in the evenings either taxiing to nearby harbour area or into Lisbon city which was about a 10-minute drive away.

Cons: Kettle in the room and more comfortable beds. The bed certainly was not 5 star quality.
Lovely grounds and experience with very professional and friendly staff. The room was well maintained and renovated.

Pros: Main building/Palace Swiiming pool
Cons: BEDS! Bathrooms
Location: Run down immediate surrounding area, a taxi or bus ride away from downtown. No close by amenities
Actual room blocks NOT 5 Star standard The hardest most uncomfortable bed I have ever slept in!!! Bathrooms need upgrading. Palace amazing and staff exceptional.

Luxury Hotel with Wonderful Gardens

Posted May 21, 2015
Pros: Attention to detail, cleanliness/presentation, guest information, great staff.
Location: Less than a 10 minute walk to the Centro de Congressos but it is up hill on the way back!. Restaurants on harbour just under the 'big bridge'.
Upon arrival all of the staff that I met were very pleasant and attentive. The hotel kindly upgraded my reservation to a junior suite with balcony overlooking the gardens which was fabulous. The old building is beautiful and immaculately presented. My room was very well appointed and comfortable with nice touches such as a Nespresso machine. The gardens are lovely with a range of mature trees and shrubs all superbly cared for. I managed to spend a little time at the outdoor swimming pool which has a poolside bar for drinks and snacks. Overall a very pleasant and comfortable stay and I wish I could have stayed for longer!

Great Gardens, Great Food and Very Nice

Posted May 12, 2015
Pros: Everything !!
Cons: Thought the lounge chairs in the bar were a little uncomfortable but we made do. By no means takes awau from the hotel
Location: It is located 10 minutes from everything by taxi so no issue.
Very nice place to stay. The staff is excellent and will take care of just about any request you might have. The grounds are to be seen to be appreciated. Just beautiful. The rooms are very nice and the food was excellent. Breakfast is our most important meal to start the day and they don't disappoint. Five stars all the way.

Do not expect to stay in the palace

Posted May 11, 2015
Pros: The palace is very nice.
Cons: mattresses, FOOD and service
Location: If you have a car and want to stay in a calm residential area you will be fine
The palace is absolutely beautiful, but your room will not be in the palace unless you are a celebrity or a politician. The room areas behind the palace are something between an American stile hotel and a motel but with a better view. The mattresses are very uncomfortable and the rooms are relatively small . The breakfast is very good, but avoid the restaurant for dinner because the food is terrible !!! We went to dinner and all 3 dishes ordered were very bad. It was the only bad meal over the 15 days we spent in Portugal. There is a dish called “dumb duck” and we discovered why it is called “dumb”: the meat is so hard that whoever eats is chewing for so long that becomes effectively silent. And the rabbit is simply inedible. Service is also poor because the hotel was clearly understaffed and courtesy is clearly different from the Pestana in Porto where staff is super friendly.
