The pièce de résistance at Sheedy’s is the food!
John's cooking has been awarded 2 AA Rosettes every year for the last 12 years and has also earned him the Georgina Campbell recommendation - "Best Breakfast in Munster" (featuring delicious homemade breads hot from the oven, homemade granola, and homemade jams, marmalades and chutneys!). Other recommendations and awards for John’s cooking include Bridgestone Guide to Ireland, Good Food Guide, Good Hotel Guide Fodors, Michelin and the New York Times.
John’s love of food is obvious from his insistence that all dishes are freshly cooked to order and his desire to source as many ingredients as possible from local artisan producers. For example, The Garrihy Family from Doolin supply fresh fish daily, salad leaves are grown by Colm Fahy who is based in the heart of The Burren, beef comes from two local butchers - Neill Hawes in Lisdoonvarna and Bernard Roughan from Ennistymon and organic raspberries and apples are supplied by Christine Sharpe in season.
Martina tends to the organic vegetables and herbs that are grown in the family’s Potager Garden just in front of the house.
It comes as no surprise that John has cooked for several dignitaries including European presidents, various Irish prime ministers and presidents and the UK Prime Minister.
Sheedy’s is a great base for exploring the Burren whether you just want to enjoy the unique landscape or if you want to get a little more active. Martina will be able to give expert advice on golf (Lahinch and Doonbeg golfcourses are nearby), surfing in Lahinch and Fanore, accessible hikes, walks and cycling trails. As keen walkers themselves, John and Martina are delighted to share their local knowledge with guests and provide maps and walking sticks and they also have a lock up shed for bikes.
The Spectacle Bridge (3 km) - The bridge spans a deep narrow gorge through which the Aille River flows. As it had to support the road at the top, a double arch forming a circular opening was built above the lower arch, giving the bridge its unusual and unique 'spectacle' appearance.
The Cliffs of Mohar (6 km) - These majestic cliffs rise from the Atlantic to a height of nearly 200 metres and extend for a distance of 8 km from Hag's Head to beyond O'Brien's Tower.
Aran Islands (15 km) - Situated in the middle of Galway Bay, the rugged, natural beauty along with thatched roof stone cottages dot the islands. Throughout the islands, you will find ruins of early monasteries, fortifications and many churches.
Walking is a big activity in our area. Our Hotel caters for walkers, we have walking maps and routes at reception. We can also arrange guides and packed lunches
