“cheap but poor”

spent a night at this hotel. Its conveniently located, but condition of the hotel is really poor - lobby looks "sad", floors make squeaking noises & mattress was really uncomfortable. However, rooms was pretty clean.

“Not for Everyone”

I stayed at The Barkston Gardens Hotel for 2 nights in July and one night in August 2011. Pros: It sits just down the block from Earls Court tube station and right across the street from a Marks & Spenser. There are numerous places to eat nearby. The reception staff are exceptionally competent, helpful, and friendly. The housekeeping staff keep the rooms and common areas sparkling clean. They have a nice snack tray in each room. Cons: This is an old building, that needs new carpets and paint in some of the rooms. The TV in the rooms get only 6 channels. The showers are the size of a telephone booth--if you are claustrophobic or portly, beware!! They charge for breakfast, luckily the Courtland Pub serves up excellent food. Noise comes in from the street if you are on the 1st floor or below. The hotel creaks a lot, so light sleepers may not get any sleep. I would recommend to someone not staying more than a couple of days, and needs to stay in Earls Court.

Area recommendations
If you can afford it, pay more and stay in the financial district, Mayfair, or Westminster.

“Christy”

The room was a little run down (cracked plaster, worn carpet, old fixtures), but VERY clean. The hotel was very conveniently located near to public transportation, restaurants, grocers and so on. No air conditioning, but lovely floor to ceiling windows that open to the garden across the street- a little loud at night, but needed for the breeze. No washcloths--bring your own or buy some down the street.

“No name dropping”

If you chose to stay at Barkston, make sure not to bring up the name in conversation... The hotel is the bare minimum for any traveler. If one enters the room too fast, the room being so small that one might fall out of the window before having time to stop... The area is ok and there are a few hotels on that street, including a youth hostel. C

“Location, Clean but Drab.”

The staff was nice (not overly friendly), clean hotle, but boy was it drab and run down looking. The place needs a good revamping. But it was cheep, safe and great location. Close to the pubs, 4 pubs in all (would not eat at the closet one (fullers) as is a chain and not very good, very bad staff, U felt like U were interupting them asking for a pint), lotts of places to eat and shop. There is also a Star Bucks down the street. I walked the street at night and felt safe. The Hotel ttryes to be good but it really needs to be revamped bad and the beds are very bad. But LOCATION, LOCATION LOCATION is all important in London.

Area recommendations
Earls Court central and cheep. Do not stay in the City center-dead at night and very crowed in the day time. Victoria is nice but they are working on the streets and its hard to get around.
When to go
May is cold. They have no Airconditioning in the pubs so think about summer alot.
Getting around
Use the Tub it is cheap, fast and easy.
Outdoors or beach
Walk alot so be preparded.

“Good, but not great”

The hotel is located right in the center of Earl's court, just a short walk from the tube station. This was ideal for what I wanted; it made an excellent base from which I could go out and explore the city. It was clean and the room was big enough, but it's an old building and it shows. The floors were very creaky, but other than that I have no complaints. The staff was friendly, the room was quiet, and overall it was comfortable. It was very affordable, but you get what you pay for. If you just need a clean bed, it's wonderful. If you want luxury and amenities, you should look elsewhere. As a student, it was exactly what I was looking for: cheap, clean, and comfortable enough.

Getting around
The tube is wonderful. Get a multi-day pass, it gives you unlimited use of the tube for its duration. Most of the major attractions are in zone 1, so you only need to buy a pass for that zone rather than buying for multiple zones.
Family-friendly activities
Most museums are free, so it's easy to pop in, see the highlights, and leave when you're ready.

“Barkston Gardens for holiday”

The hotel staff were relatively nice at checkin and checkout. The room was at the basement level and was surprisingly quiet. The shower was nice and hot.

“Location awesome! Rest sucks, but doable when on a budget”

The room we were given had burn marks or something brownish looking like skidmarks on the floor. The room was rather run down, but had it was roomy especially for London which tends to have the smallest hotel rooms in the world. The bathroom was OK, clean and in working order. The windows closed, but one could not be locked. I wasn't to bothered as I take all valuables with me when I go away, but this may be a concern to some. The heat was on and even with the 40 F weather outside and a window open it felt more like 80 F inside! I could not get the heat turned off, spent the night with the sheets thrown off the bed. The next day the heat was off and I got a decent night's sleep. Not a great experience. What is a great experience is the neighborhood. This hotel is literally just a two minute walk from Earl's Court Tube which will get you to Central London on the Picadilly Line in under 15 minutes. At night there is a nice hustle and bustle going on and there are plenty of options to get dinner at a (for London) reasonable price too! I especially recommend the Byron's Proper Hamburger restaurant right next to the tube. AWESOME food! If you want something for on the go or in your room you can get tasty stuff at the Marks & Spences Simply Food that's under a minute's walk from the hotel. The pub next to the hotel serves a decent breakfast at comparable rates you only get a mediocre breakfast for at the hotel.

Area recommendations
If you are hungry and don't mind eating while standing definitely try the food section in Camden. Very nice. Also Greenwich park is a nice place and you'll find more peace and quiet there than any of the big London parks. Be sure to use the tkts-ofice for discounted tickets to West End shows located on Leicesters Square, they are guaranteed to be accepted at the venue which does not always is the case with tickets purchased elsewhere.

“Excellent location- great budget hotel”

Don't expect the Westin, but this was a great hotel for the budget minded traveler. It truly is 200 meters from a tube stop and there were plenty of restaurants and grocery stores near by- for all budgets. The rooms were on the small side, but if you are only there for sleeping and showering, it does the job. Everything was clean and safe when I returned from a day's sightseeing. The bed wasn't the coziest that I have slept on, but for a short visit, it was fine.
