“Best Value in Santa Monica”

The staff are very nice and very helpful. A great location walking distance from numerous restaurants, the Promenade and a block from the beach. However, if you want pampering and room service, go somewhere else.

“Quality for a cheap price”

Extremely comfortable rooms, located just off the sea front by the pier. If you just want somewhere to lay your head then for the area this is a bargain price.

“I LOVE Hotel California”

I LOVE Hotel California. I was a bit nervous about the booking based on some of the neutral reviews.....but was extremely pleased with my decision to stay there. The staff was very friendly and I really don't think you could have a better location in Santa Monica....literally steps from the beach, the Santa Monica Pier and a very short walk to the Third Street Promenade (a bit over-rated) or Main Street (where the fun/funky shops and restaurants are located). We spent four nights in a ground level Jr. Suite.....very spacious with a kitchenette. The room was clean and and well maintained. We loved the pastries, fruit and fresh coffee that was available around the clock in the front office. Be sure to rent bikes and cruise the beaches. Hotel California feels more like an apartment complex (the old TV show "Melrose Place" quickly came to mind) than a hotel.....complete with cute courtyards, long-term residents, etc. Keep in mind, however, that Hotel California may not be for everyone. It's very informal, quirky and some of the comments from other guests were true. Parking in the area is tough...,,but no biggie. Also, the wooden floors ARE thin (so be aware of this if you are in a ground level unit).....and again, no biggie. With that said.......go elsewhere if you want luxury. But.......if you want the quintessential Santa Monica experience and want to feel like a resident and not a tourist......you MUST stay here. It will definitely be my hotel of choice when I return to LA.

“Great birthday weekend hotel”

Location was great, hotel is really cute, room is cute (although the bathroom could use some updating). We parked and just walked all weekend, rode our bikes down the coast through Venice to Manhattan Beach. Very quiet, peaceful but close to lots of activity (The Santa Monica Pier). It was a great spot for a getaway weekend. Will definitely stay again.

Great hotel with great location and nice, relaxed hotel service. The rooms are small, but comfortable. The only drawback was the tiny shower/no bathtub in the bathroom. Otherwise, great place!!

The location is awesome. The hotel itself is very very cozy and well maintained. Staff was awesome. I would recommend this hotel to anyone and everyone.

Just steps from the beach and like stepping back in time. Well maintained and retro chic-kitch. Not a lot of TV channels and no pool . . . perfect! Great courtyard for relaxing in the afternoons with a cup of coffee or glass of wine. The staff was great and the location can't be beat. Loews next door has a wonderful spa if you need a bit of pampering, but truly loved the down-to-earth comfort of this place. We look forward to going back!

“Very cute and excellent location!”

We thought the hotel was so cute and had a great feel to it. The location was excellent as we walked right out the back to run on the beach walk every morning! The staff were really helpful. The two complaints were the parking was really a problem and the plumbing - hot/cold water mix. The hotel did fix the plumbing problem within a few hours. I would recommend to those who want a vintage beach experience and don't need a lot of amenities - our style but recognise this isn't for all.

The room was inviting and avoided the typical hotel feel. Front desk attendant could have been a bit more eager to help, but location and cleanliness were great. Comfortable bed.
