Great service and staff

Posted Jun 2, 2015
Pros: The staff was friendly and courteous. The free breakfast and wine tasting was a lovely touch.
Cons: The rooms are a bit small, but it was fine for our short stay.
The hotel staff provided such great service! They greeted us with a friendly smile at check-in and carried our baggage to our room. We were given a tour of the facilities as well as the amenities in our room. We were greeted, by name, every time we left and returned to the hotel. It was clean, quite and within walking distance to everything. I'd highly recommend it to anyone who asked!

One night stay in Long Beach, Varden Hotel

Posted Jun 1, 2015
Pros: The staff.
Cons: Location was a bit of a draw back, being at the edge of downtown core. Away slight walk away for the restaurants and tourist areas.
Location: The free trolley/bus service makes everything accessible.
We really enjoyed our one night stay in Long Beach, thanks to the helpful staff at the Varden hotel. Our stay was for one night before catching a cruise the following day. The Varden was as advertised, simple and pleasant enough with a modern décor without being over the top. Good light snacks and breakfast were available. Our staff person was very helpful and informative and made our getting around Long Beach very easy. A drawback would be for families as there were no facilities (e.g. pool, fitness area), that I noticed, to keep the kids busy.

Old building, nice staff

Posted May 20, 2015
Pros: Staff, breakfast, peanuts at evening!
Location: Queen Mary, Beach, shopping... Not so much though.
I stayed for a week in Varden. It is an old building, which was restored few years back, but not totaly reconstructed. So one might hear squeking of stairs and catch old smell of moist cascade or smth alike. So it appeares nice and coisy. Bed and pilows are comfortable. Staff is very nice and friendly gladly answer all questions and help with everythig. Fine breakfast.

Worth the close quarters for so many reasons.

Posted May 9, 2015
Pros: Quiet, friendly, clean, close to everything we needed. We felt happy and secure.
Cons: Maybe a folding chair under the bed for extra seating. Otherwise they seem to have thought of every detail.
This is a unique hotel where we spent three nights and four days. The charming rooms are compact, but well planned. Importantly, it is extremely quiet and private. The restaurant district, parks, retro district, the pier, and the convention center are all within walking district and public transportation is abundant. There is a cleverly disguised grocery store across the street. Parking is street level and adjacent to the hotel. It is well patrolled. We felt very safe and secure and the desk is manned 24/7, providing great service and warm greetings. If your entire experience in Long Beach is going to take place in your hotel room, you may want to stay someplace roomier, but if you want a pleasant, clean, quiet place to sleep, dress, and use a computer, this hotel is a gem. We are already planning our next trip to Long Beach and we will definitely stay at the Varden!

Good inexpensive older hotel in downtown

Posted Apr 29, 2015
Pros: Clean, simple, efficient room furnishings.
Cons: I can't think of anything, unless folks are looking for more fru-fru stuff to raise the room rates.
Location: Light-rail stop next door, Pine Ave is 1 block away, harbor is 4 blocks away. Any questions?
It's funny... the old sign atop the art-deco Varden Hotel states "A Bath In Every Room", but my room only had a shower stall. Not that I'm complaining; I prefer shower stalls over baths, but the one thing that the hotel has evidently been advertising to the world besides its name is untrue. Unless perhaps by "Bath" they just meant "Bathroom" and not "Bathtub". Anyway, I found it quirky and amusing... The hotel is clean, well-planned, and efficient. Rooms were inexpensive for downtown Long Beach and for a business traveler or other lone travelers just looking for a place to sleep and shower, this place is great. The location being at a light-rail stop, just one block from Pine Ave, and four blocks from the harbor is pretty ideal as well. For me, working at a nearby business 3 blocks away, the Varden was an ideal solution for a few night's stay.

Recommended hotel from a world traveler

Excellent hotel. Small but space efficient room. Very quiet air conditioning. confortable bed and pillows. Very kind staff. Nice wine from 5 to 7 pm to unwind and plan the evening. Just a bemol: sound isolation is medium, you can hear TV and shower from other room in the morning. I was lucky, it happened only at the weekend.
