Old building, nice staff

Posted May 20, 2015
Pros: Staff, breakfast, peanuts at evening!
Location: Queen Mary, Beach, shopping... Not so much though.
I stayed for a week in Varden. It is an old building, which was restored few years back, but not totaly reconstructed. So one might hear squeking of stairs and catch old smell of moist cascade or smth alike. So it appeares nice and coisy. Bed and pilows are comfortable. Staff is very nice and friendly gladly answer all questions and help with everythig. Fine breakfast.

Worth the close quarters for so many reasons.

Posted May 9, 2015
Pros: Quiet, friendly, clean, close to everything we needed. We felt happy and secure.
Cons: Maybe a folding chair under the bed for extra seating. Otherwise they seem to have thought of every detail.
This is a unique hotel where we spent three nights and four days. The charming rooms are compact, but well planned. Importantly, it is extremely quiet and private. The restaurant district, parks, retro district, the pier, and the convention center are all within walking district and public transportation is abundant. There is a cleverly disguised grocery store across the street. Parking is street level and adjacent to the hotel. It is well patrolled. We felt very safe and secure and the desk is manned 24/7, providing great service and warm greetings. If your entire experience in Long Beach is going to take place in your hotel room, you may want to stay someplace roomier, but if you want a pleasant, clean, quiet place to sleep, dress, and use a computer, this hotel is a gem. We are already planning our next trip to Long Beach and we will definitely stay at the Varden!

Good inexpensive older hotel in downtown

Posted Apr 29, 2015
Pros: Clean, simple, efficient room furnishings.
Cons: I can't think of anything, unless folks are looking for more fru-fru stuff to raise the room rates.
Location: Light-rail stop next door, Pine Ave is 1 block away, harbor is 4 blocks away. Any questions?
It's funny... the old sign atop the art-deco Varden Hotel states "A Bath In Every Room", but my room only had a shower stall. Not that I'm complaining; I prefer shower stalls over baths, but the one thing that the hotel has evidently been advertising to the world besides its name is untrue. Unless perhaps by "Bath" they just meant "Bathroom" and not "Bathtub". Anyway, I found it quirky and amusing... The hotel is clean, well-planned, and efficient. Rooms were inexpensive for downtown Long Beach and for a business traveler or other lone travelers just looking for a place to sleep and shower, this place is great. The location being at a light-rail stop, just one block from Pine Ave, and four blocks from the harbor is pretty ideal as well. For me, working at a nearby business 3 blocks away, the Varden was an ideal solution for a few night's stay.

VERY tiny hotel room in Long Beach

Posted Feb 10, 2015
Pros: The location. It's very close to everything downtown.
Cons: The price. Should be like $75 a night.
Location: Great! Walking distance from bars and restaurants.
The room was very tiny but clean. Sliding closets door separate the bedroom from the bathroom which gives no privacy to couples. The front desk clerk didn't have a wine opener or knife which I found very strange. Our room did not come with a mini fridge and there were no snack or drink machines. Not even free coffee or water! I would recommend staying somewhere else for this price point ($150 including tax). However the manager was so kind that I did not have the heart to complain about anything.
