Nice hotel opposite beachPosted Jul 20, 2014
Lovely hotel in prime location opposite beach. The hotel is full of character high ceilings and wide staircase and beautiful restaurant. The highlight for us was the swimming pool area sat in lush gardens which was like an oasis, after a long journey.

Great hotel, great locationPosted Jun 1, 2014
Pros: Great location, lovely rooms, fabulous breakfast, wonderful pool area and gardens
Cons: Nothing, it's all great
Location: Lots of restaurants and shops close by and the beach is just right across the street
We've stayed at this hotel several times. It's always the same great standard, the rooms are lovely, breakfast is great, staff are very attentive. Pool area is wonderful, a quiet oasis in a very busy town! Nice bar and lovely grounds and gardens.

Would recommend this hotelPosted Nov 2, 2013
Pros: Location, facilities and staff. Convenient to have free Wifi in your room - something that many 4 star hotels will charge for.
Cons: We had dinner at the hotel most evenings. Generally good but perhaps a bit overpriced but not enough to stop us eating there.
Location: Plenty of cafes, eating places & ice-cream shops nearby. Convenient for day-trips to Florence, Pisa and Lucca.
Have often found that 4 star hotels in Italy and Spain are often really 3 star, however I would rate the Grand as a definite 4 star. Old world atmosphere but with good facilities. The staff were all friendly and helpful. Great location overlooking the seafront in nice area of Viareggio. Would recommend it and would definitely consider staying there again.

Nice eat your heart out.Posted Sep 27, 2013
Pros: The staff were excellent, and the main bar was very good.
Cons: Please change the music in the dining room - it was truly awful!
Initial impressions were very good. The Grand Hotel Royal is an impressive building - not surprising as it's a former palazzzo. We chose a room without a view over the beautiful Viareggio promenade, as we don't normally spend a lot of time in our hotel, but, while comfortable enough, it was smaller than we expected. In particular, the en-suite facilities were challenging, with a small shower area and minimal space for bits and pieces. The bidet was an intrusion. The major negative however was the dining room. We dined in the hotel on the first night, and, whereas the food and service were of a high standard, the ambience was more akin to that of a military canteen. There was a piano in the middle of the cavernous dining room, but no pianist. Instead some form of martial music blared out from a Hi-Fi in the corner near our table. Dinner is supposed to be a pleasant. relaxing experience. Instead, at any moment, we expected the sort of military procession that we saw with great delight in the Palazzo Duomo the previous weekend in San Gimignano. They really need to change the person in charge of the music! We ate out the following two nights!! The second gripe, and perhaps that is unavoidable in Italy, is that 4 smokers adjacent to you at the poolside can be unpleasant. That said, we may go back. Viareggio is delightful, the hotel location is excellent, and the staff are very attentive.

Impressive hotel in a great locationPosted Sep 25, 2013 on Hotels.com
There's a definite wow factor about this vast and palatial hotel when you first enter. It feels almost like going back in time although there seemed to be a lot of empty spaces that made it feel to us slightly impersonal rather than cosy. Our sea-view room was huge - we couldn't believe the amount of space we had! Service from all the staff was great, with a high standard of cleanliness and the breakfasts were great. Reception were very helpful on local restaurants etc., and our only slight gripe was that they refused to let us to settle our bill soon after we arrived. We had our own reasons for wanting to do this but the hotel's policy didn't seem to have the flexibility to allow it. Leaving that aside, it was a very enjoyable stay and we would not hesitate to go back.

Lovely hotel in a good locationPosted Sep 21, 2013
Location: Pisa, Lucca and Florence are all easiy to get to with public transport, even with a baby in tow! Recommend this hotel if staying in Viareggio.
Stayed here for 9 nights in September. We had a family room which was a good size - the separate sleeping and living area was perfect even with a 19 month old running around! The maid service was excellent too and all the staff were extremely helpful and friendly. We also had a couple of afternoons at the pool which were very relaxing.

A week in the Best Western ViareggioPosted Sep 9, 2013
Pros: Spacious public areas and the excellent pool. And the very helpful staff.
Cons: More storage in the bedrooms
Location: Visiting Pisa and Lucca very easy by public transport
This Hotel has really friendly staff. The public rooms are unusually comfortable and tastefully decorated. The Hotel's pool is beautifully situated in the grounds and has every facility required. In view of the nature of the Italian beach access to which is quite expensive this pool made all the difference. I would add that there is no music playing which should be encouraged. The room was adequate and beds comfortable. More storage would be nice. Our room had a sea view which was very wonderful at sun set. Anyone adventurous might like to know that the local bus goes direct to Pisa Airport.

Outside looks like a castle, inside is worn outPosted Aug 22, 2013
Cons: Tell the staff they are in a service industry and to try being a little friendly.
Location: Fabulous beaches. Leaning Tower of Pisa just a short ride away.
This hotel IS VERY GRAND LOOKING from the street. It sits almost near the end of the main pedestrian zone promenade. On the water side is all shops and a sprinkling of restaurants. Beyond that, thousands of umbrellas and chairs for beach goers. The rooms are VERY small. The shower is just a drain hole in the bathroom floor with a flimsy curtain surround, so the entire floor gets wet. The pool is nice and large, but several babies in diapers and the umbrellas around the pool deck are soiled and filled with mildew stains. The male staff was ok, but the female staff were aloof and distant. No extra service there, no smiles, borderline rude.
