Stay at The Winter Palace and live like a king

Posted Apr 25, 2015
Pros: The Winter Palace truly has a 'one-off' quality. It's from a bygone era - gracious, substantial, splendid. The staff are warm, helpful and friendly
Cons: It could benefit from a lick of paint but not at the expense of losing its sublime character and charm.
Location: The Winter Palace commands the best location in Luxor. Close to the temples, the town centre, the souk, restaurants and right on the Nile.
We spent a mid-April week at The Winter Palace and could have easily stayed longer, so welcoming and comfortable was our visit there. The Winter Palace is in a premier league of its own. Grand and majestic in its architecture and furnishings yet helpful and friendly in its treatment of guests. The frequent question we were asked, 'Is everything all right?', was genuine and intentional. All the staff were prepared to make our stay at The Winter Palace positively memorable. And memorable it was. The deputy Manager, a delightful, sweet woman was always available at Reception to ensure our requirements were met with helpfulness and friendliness. Ashruf, the hotel masseur is a courteous, polite and truly gifted healer. He brings soothing comfort to tired, stressed bodies. Don't pass up the opportunity of one of Ashruf's massages. Bedrooms are big, high ceilinged and appointed with period furniture. Beds/pillows are comfortable, the linen of the highest quality. Rooms are cleaned immaculately every day, and each evening the linen is turned down and bottles of water left behind. Nile view rooms offer stunning vistas. Bathrooms are marbled and huge. Thick, soft towels are changed twice daily. A magnificent garden leads to a vast swimming pool. Sun loungers have thick comfortable mattress and are draped generously with towels. The Winter Palace is unique. Forget the few high rise, anonymous, glass hotels of Luxor. Book yourself into The Winter Palace and live like a king.

Charming old world hotel by the Nile.

Posted Jan 13, 2015
Pros: Convenient location for many of Luxor's attractions. The gardens and old world charm.
Cons: Internal communications. Customer service and empathy with customer's situation.
Location: Very convenient location for Luxor Temple, Karnak and the souq
Staff were ineffective when dealing with a problem when the hot water system was cut off for most of the day causing us to wait until 10pm in the evening to get a hot shower. Lack of taking responsibility for the problem and poor communication between the responsible departments which is not what one would expect from a 5 star hotel. Staff were very friendly and polite despite our exasperation at times.

Luxurious colonial splendour with friendly and attentive staff. The best pool in Luxor. Our third stay. Never fails to impress and entice us back. The best view of sunset over the Valley of the Kings.

Classic hotel, memorabilia fun for history buffs

Posted Dec 24, 2014
Pros: If you have work to do, be aware that the Internet is quite slow.
Cons: A selection of reasonably priced café food.
Location: Souk and some temples are within walking distance or short cab ride. Getting to the main attractions on the West Bank takes about 45 minutes.
The hotel and grounds are lovely. Corniche-side rooms have lovely views, but it's pretty noisy. Restaurants and room service are overpriced and nothing special; staff seems to have been discouraged from recommending places to eat nearby.

Magnifique hôtel face au Nil.

Posted Sep 25, 2014
Pros: Tout.

Vintage perfection!

Posted Jan 15, 2014 on Hotels
This gracious hotel has been preserved to reflect it's grandure while offering all the up to date comforts. We could not have expected a warmer welcome from the excellent staff. The personal touches in the rooms were excellent. The gardens are a treasure trove and well worth exploring. Staying in this hotel has been on my bucket list for many years and I was not dissappointed at all. The raised terraces overlooking the Nile are wonderful for watching the river life. The carriage rides are pricey but a great novelty and lends itself well to the location and hotel.

Old Palace Still Pleases

Posted Jan 9, 2014 on Hotels
The Winter Palace is a wonderful old building located right in the heart of Luxor, and in the heart of Egyptian history. The grounds are beautiful very well-kept, although the hotel is need of minor renovation in order to earn the 5-star rating I would really like to give it. We had a great experience there, and enjoyed staying in a hotel that was part of the original grand tour. The manual elevator doors and giant keys for the rooms added to the character. Our only complaints were that the building in general could use a fresh coat of paint, and other minor things like the carpet was loose around our balcony door and would get stuck on the door. These are minor problems, but for a Sofitel and the premium price that comes with it, you would expect a bit better. Luxor is virtually empty right now due to the ongoing revolution in Egypt, but we would highly encourage people to go, because you have the place to yourself, and you likely won't be disappointed with the Winter Palace.
