Not 4-star by any stretch of the imagination
Overall, this was a disappointing stay because the standard of the hotel does not reflect the very high customer rating or the 4-star designation... in any way!
Firstly, the good: the staff were friendly and very helpful; the room was clean; the location is interesting and picturesque; we had a view of the sea from the bathroom window; enjoyed dinner at the restaurant with tasty and wholesome homemade food.
Now the not so good: the room seemed trapped in the 1980s - tiny TV, musty smell, no duvet, just a ribbed blanket, flannel sheets and flannel pillowcases. The bathroom was like a municipal washroom, with polystyrene tiles on the ceiling, and public-sized dispensers for toilet paper and paper towels... I have never been in a hotel room with a paper towel dispenser before. The hotel information left in the room for guests has no welcoming or helpful content and instead is a list of rules - one of which is that no outside water, juice or soft drinks may be brought into the room??? One day, we deliberately left the Do Not Disturb sign on the door... only to find when we returned that it had been removed and the room serviced anyway. It didn't really matter, but I expect a hotel to respect their guests' privacy. When we ate dinner in the restaurant we were told they don't serve tap water because it is too high in iron... no other restaurant we ate at, the following 10 nights, refused us tap water. My later research showed that Madeira tap water is perfectly safe to drink.
