RelaxingPosted Sep 19, 2014
Cons: Perhaps the cost of some of the trips the hotel arranges.
Location: Excellent location, can have a view of the port and town or a quieter garden view.
Great hotel with friendly staff and excellent service. Great surroundings and wonderful views. We go back time after time. Love Madeira too.

Beautiful, Golden-age, 5 Star HotelPosted Sep 2, 2014
This is not a cheap hotel. It is truly 5 Star. So we justified our holiday by choosing the cheapest room "charming" with the buffet breakfast. However, upon arrival we were upgraded by 2 levels to a "superior"room. Amazing! Our room had a private terrace, whch was totally private, shielded from other rooms by a colourful section of tropical garden. At the end of the tsrrace, a path winds through the public gardens and brings you out at the pool area. The buffet breakfast is unlike any other I have experienced, so much choice and all delicious. The staff were fabulous, looking after your every need. There are two heated pools on level 0 and a seawater pool at the ocean level, with diving boards into the ocean. We decided to have an afternoon tea on the famous Reid's terrace. What a view of Funchal Bay! I had forgotten to mention in advance that I am a vegetarian, but nothing was too much trouble and they had the chef rustle up a fantastic range of veggie sandwiches A very romantic experience! We met many guests who come to stay at Reiid's every year and that is a fraternity we would love to be a part of. I have never felt so sad to be leaving a hotel, a true palace.

AN ICONIC HOTELPosted Aug 22, 2014
Cons: Not really
Location: Quite close to Funchal town. Plenty of cafes and restaurants. also plenty of restaurants in the opposite direction
My wife an I had a great time. It was her 80th birthday, and the hotel put a lovely flower arrangement, a bottle of champagne, and Birthday card from staff, on the side table.. The pool areas were kept immaculate, and the staff arranged the loungers wherever you wanted and laid out the towels. (they wouldn't let me do it) We had a room upgrade which was excellent. We ate in the hotel twice. On my wife's birthday and on our last night, which was rather expensive. It was a hot and cold buffet., but as we only ever eat a main course was expensive at 78 euros each. There was also a trio playing. This all took place around the pool. Incidentally we are both 80 but young in outlook. Last year we went to a Santana concert. Rod Stewart, Iron Maiden, also went to Ronnie Scotts to see Jose Feliciano. Met him backstage. So you can see we are not old fogies

High quality hotel with excellent staffPosted Aug 21, 2014
Pros: Many facilities for those that want to chill out at the hotel, including extensive gardens, pools, spa .
Location: the hotel shuttle is useful instead of the walk back from Funchal promenade. Many restaurants near to hotel to suit all budgets.
Visited in Aug 2014. A hotel of the highest standard that distinguishes itself by very attentive staff who went out of their way to give a high quality experience. We tried all the hotel restaurants throughout our stay as well as 'afternoon tea' - not inexpensive but a special experience.

Hotel that takes you back to a bygone eraPosted Jul 20, 2014
This is a hotel you won't forget. Many 5 star hotels these days, though modern and thoroughly enjoyable, become "just another hotel". Reids palace is different. As you wander past huge fresh flower arrangements and pianos being played while the guests are dressed to be served afternoon tea (guests always dressed suitably, men in jackets, trousers, shirts & ties and women in dresses) it takes you back in time. This hotel makes its mark on you. This is a hotel you will remember! There is an option for a romantic moonlit dinner, it sounds exquisite. 4 days flew by and I know I will definitely be going back! Don't expect modern and spacious rooms and bathrooms, again the rooms are original, but do expect oodles of charm. I can't wait to go back!

Lovely hotel, lovely location and lovely staffPosted Jun 25, 2014
Location: Location is perfect and walkable to the centre of town although we did use the courtesy bus a couple of times.
We are just back from a stay at reids. From the minute we entered the hotel we knew it would be a memorable stay. The staff were excellent throughout and couldn't be more helpful even when we asked for a late checkout it was no problem. Breakfast was always good and plentiful. We ate at ciprianas one night which was nice. The location of the hotel is quite spectacular and their gardens are well worth a visit. All in all a great holiday.

Incredible Hotel!!Posted Jun 22, 2014
This hotel is incredible! The service was from a bygone age with careful attention to detail. We went for our anniversary and were pleasantly surprised with a bottle of bubbly, flowers and lotion from the spa. Peace and tranquility made our stay very relaxing. The food was great and the location was fine. Some nights there was live music which was a treat. We will definately stay there again.

60th Birthday TreatPosted Jun 8, 2014
Cons: Stay out of the bar the prices are ridiculous. We went once,if the prices hadn't been so high we would have gone most evenings.
From the moment we were picked up at the Airport we were treated as valued guests. Nothing was too much for the staff who were unfailingly cheerful and helpful. This gave the hotel a wonderful atmosphere .Our room although advertised as charming with a petite partial sea view balcony was lovely with two chairs and table in the room and the same on the balcony. Our view was of the pool area and out to sea.Everything we could have wished for was provided.Breakfast was served in a beautiful room overlooking the pools and out to sea.The choice and quality of breakfast was outstanding and the staff delightful.A perfect way to start the day.We ate in Les Faunes restaurant once and had a lovely meal. We have had better food elsewhere but the views, pianist and staff made it an evening to remember.Unfortunately the weather was not good during our stay so we did not swim at all .There is so much to do and see on Madeira the weather did not really matter and of course it provides us with a perfect excuse to return as soon as possible.Thank you for a wonderful week .
