Calheta Beach Hotel - Relaxing and Enjoyable

Posted Jul 24, 2011 on Hotels.com
As a family we enjoyed a very comfortable and relaxing week at the Calheta Beach Hotel. I would certainly recommend an Ocean view room over a Land/Mountain view room - we changed rooms after 1 night. The staf throughout were very friendly, knowledgable and helpful. The beach itself is man-made, but was more than adequate for our needs. Having said that, we spent most of our time by the pool sipping cocktails and enjoying the sun. The hotel food is enjoyable, but there are also a number of restaurants outside the Hotel complex in the surrounding area that are worth a visit - Convento Das Vinhas in particular. Overall, an enjoyable stay and we would recommend it to anyone looking for a relaxing holiday.

A little disappointing

Posted May 29, 2009
This hotel is advertised as a luxury option, but it was not as special as I had hoped. Many of the facilities (eg sauna and turkish bath) were not turned, not available or tired looking & the room was rather basic. It was definately worth paying more for the sea view as there were building works taking place on the land view side of the hotel. However I think this hotel was over-priced for what you get. The breakfast was very good, but dinner was cheaper and better outside the hotel on the marina front.

Stayed here for a week in November and was very impressed. The hotel is well maintained, very clean, good facilities and excellent service. Food was of a high standard, we went for the buffet option and were very impressed compared with other hotels that we've eaten at. There is an excellent sandy beach (one of the few on Madeira), and a supermarket directly opposite which has all the essentials at good prices compared to the UK. A car is more or less essential here as it is out of the way, but as Madeira is relatively compact you can get pretty much anywhere in less than an hour, so location is not a big issue. Would recommend this hotel without hesitation, all round excellent value for money!

A hotel I would be happy to return to next year

For a quiet laid back holiday it can't be beaten. Multi national guests - many german, polish etc but all staff and locals speak english. No rushing to get sun beds etc. Next to only sandy beach on Madeira and a harbour with several cafes come restaurants. Location a little remote if without a car although hotel lays on transport to popular locations.

Chill out

This is not some over-priced, ultra-smart boutique hotel, although Madeira has those if that's what you're after. It's a really nice, relaxed, well-run establishment with pleasant, friendly staff, so if you want somewhere to really unwind it's ideal. It's worth going for a sea-view. It's well situated about half an hour from Funchal and next to the only sandy beach on Madeira. It is bright and airy and efficiently maintained. The breakfast buffet is fine with a good selection of fresh breads, pancakes and the usual continental buffet fare. The rest of the food tends to be bland, but that is surprisingly common in Madeiran retaurants. The raw ingredients are fantastic: fresh fish, great vegetables and fruit such as flavoursome local bananas, but somehow the cooking often fails to live up to expectations. The hotel lays on a programme of trips and evening entertainment, but most guests seem to prefer to do their own thing.

This hotel was the perfect place to stay in Madeira, ideal for exploring he west of the island and only 30 mins drive from Funchal. The service was great the room was very nice with a huge bathroom. Breakfast at the hotel was the best I've experienced and for those not staying half board there are a three good restaurants a stones throw from the hotel.

Excellent choice

Staff were extreemly polite and helpful, excellent setting for a quiet holiday. There is nothing else in Calheta, so a car is definitely advisable.
