Low prices, great service

The best place to be for few days if you like small villages, or better if you are passing do stop here. Prices are usually low compared to the service and free pool and jacuzzi.

Stunning Location

Posted Jun 3, 2008
The Estalagem is separated from the Atlantic only by its own grassy sunning area, a wall and some rocks. The sea is loud enough to drown out any trace of other guests, but not loud enough to be a problem at night. Try asking for a ground floor room with its own small terrace and direct access to the sunning area. The local scenery can also be enjoyed from the dining room with its panoramic windows. Breakfast was no more than adequate, with a limited range of hot and cold food. The room was gloomy, the only area lit to a reasonable standard being the bathroom. Provided you can get a reasonable deal, and hire a car, the Estalagem do Mar is a fine base for exploring the island. The road network has improved significantly over the past five years, and it is now possible to get anywhere on the island and still have time to enjoy the superb mountainous scenery to be found on Madeira. Take a good guide book if you are interested in walking and sightseeing - the Sunflower book is highly recommended (now in its 8th edition).

Lovely hotel - bigger than you would think with very friendly staff and a nice pool. Go mainly for the view of the cliff

Better than Funchal

If you are looking for a very comfortable well run hotel away from the overdevlopment of the southeastern part of Madeira this is the hotel for you. Swimming pool, sauna and jacuzzi were all functional and clean the staff polite and very helpful. The location is ideal for exploring the northern part of the island.

Good Value

We really enjoyed ourselves and this was the cheapest hotel that matched our search criteria. We made full use of the indoor pool, sauna and jacuzzi after days of sightseeing. Some of the equipment in the gym was not working and would benefit from some updating. Facilities in the rooms were quite minimal, the hairdriers are not very powerful and 1 was not working properly at all. The lighting was a bit dim in the rooms but it was very clean and generally comfortable. The staff were very friendly and helpful with good English. It was relaxing sitting on the balcony at the end of the day, watching the waves. A full buffet-style breakfast is included and you can eat as much as you want. We had 3 rooms with good sea views and balconies. It is only a 40 minute drive to Funchal (50 to the airport). There were 3 or 4 very reasonably priced restarants on the seafront, only a 5 minute walk from the hotel.

Wonderful hotel

Loved the hotel, it was not the most luxurious in the world and was a little musty but it was fantastic and a great location. I go on holiday to enjoy myself and not to find fault so I loved it. Great location, great scenery.

Estalagem do Mar hotel, Sao Vicente

Posted Sep 28, 2007
Very pleasant staff, excellent restaurant. Main comments - yes, all rooms do have a sea view, but our original room's sea view was minimal, you had to go outside to see it, across the many sunbeds and sea wall. however, the lovely receptionist was most accommodating, and agreed to us changing our room - this one had the most spectacular view of the sea and the coast. Very quiet location, easy to find.
