You get what you pay for.Posted Jul 17, 2014
We stayed in this hotel in high season and as soon as we arrived it looked quite dated and what it looked like from outside it did look the same inside, very dated, smelled of sewege in the room, swimming pool very dirty and swim area mouldy and dirty. Rooms very dark and as much they try to keep room clean it just old and beyond help. Reception staff was rude and not helpful when we asked for some shirts to be ironed, receptionist said to me partner ,can she do it?' Pointing at me, I was shocked. Overall not nice experience, do not stay there. Its worth paying little bit more as Madeira has really nice hotels. Only good thing I would say its good location near restaurants, we had a car rented but it was close to most of the things.

Pros: Excellent location
Great location, swimming pool and tennis courts. The breakfast was very good and the dinning room was spacious and had great views. I walked into town and there is a local shopping centre and great restaurants just across the road opposite.

Did exactly what it said on the tin!!Posted Jan 31, 2013
Pros: Location and friendliness of staff.
Cons: Hills, but hey what do you expect on an island like beautiful Madeira.
Location: Heart of Funchal, within easy reach of both the old and new areas. Also access to where ever you want to visit.
It is a nicely run hotel, with its own swimming pools and restaurant. Not far from the local shops, bars, restaurants and cafes, the nearest of which is within 100 yards of the front door. There are bus stops, both local and tourist, and taxi ranks also within 100 yards. Many tours can be taken to any part of the island, basically from the front door and normally at a reasonable cost.

Gorgulho...basic but more than adequate.Posted Jan 16, 2013
Pros: The location and the price.
Cons: Rooms rather shabby and beds not the best.
Location: Excellently located with all facilities close by and bus stops outside.
Have used this hotel before so knew what to expect. Its a budget hotel and you get what you pay for. Room basic but adequate, breakfasts basic but adequate. Well situated beside main route into city centre with bus stops close by and plenty of facilities (shops, lido, restaurants etc) within short walk. If you want luxury there aer plenty of options in the vicinity but for a cheaper break this ticks the boxes. Ask for a sea facing room (preferably higher up) for the views and to avoid traffic noise.

Tired and in need of a refurb.Posted Aug 23, 2011
We booked a 4 day break at the very last minute so no research beforehand but prepared to take what was available. After booking read that the hotel was run down and agree that the decor was very tired and the hotel was long overdue a refurb. However The reception was welcoming, cool and airy but the same could not be said for our room with no air con. ventilation was via the balcony window which meant to keep the room coolish you had to put up wth street noise etc. On the plus side the room and bedding were clean, and kept clean daily with towels also changed daily. The room had a separate kitchenette and although dated everything worked, found having a fridge especially useful. The hotel had a pool which was great for a cooling dip and only 200 metres from the hotel was the Funchal Lido. Our balcony had a sea view and also looked out over central Funchal which is a couple of kilometres from the hotel but with a bus stop and taxi rank literally on the doostep transport into town was not an issue. There are lots of good restaurants and bars within 2 to 3 minutes walk of the hotel catering for all tastes and pockets. There are also range of shops including a reasonable supermarket for those wishing to self cater. This hotel was bargain basement, no frills but clean with helpful, friendly staff, providing an excellent base for exploring Funchal with good local facilties on the doorstep. Probably better for a short break than a longer stay
