NINE DAYS OF PEACE AND TRANQUILITY

Posted Oct 31, 2014
I HAVE NOTHING BUT PRAISE FOR THIS HOTEL. IT IS ,BY DESIGN A PERFECTLY SITUATED RESTING POINT TO ENJOY THE SENSATION OF BEING IN FUNCHAL,WHILE BEING CARRIED BACK IN TIME TO QUIETER DAYS AND TO HAVE THE CHANCE TO VIEW THE TOWN AND IT'S SETTING AGAINST THE ATLANTIC. IT'S A SMALL HOTEL WHICH ENABLES THE STAFF TREAT ALL THEIR GUESTS WITH EQUANIMITY AND AN OLD-FASHIONED PERSONAL STYLE VERY DIFFICULT TO FIND THESE DAYS. WE HOLIDAYED HERE 15 YEARS AGO, AND CAME BACK TO SEE IF WE STILL FELT THE SAME ABOUT IT. IT'S STILL THE MOST ROMANTIC CORNER OF A LOVELY ISLAND.

The oldest hotel on the island, full of character

Had a lovely stay, staff very friendly and helpful. Hotel is up a steep hill in the old town, so the less mobile may need a taxi.

Lovely views

Posted Jul 15, 2014
Pros: It was very welcoming from the time we arrived and felt more like home than a hotel.
Cons: The water in our room wasn't hot just warm.
Location: The Hotel is about 20 minutes walk down hill to the Old town of Funchal. The cable cars are a must to see the stunning vies of Funchal.
Stunning views of the sea and harbor. The staff are very friendly and helpful at all times. We liked the character of the hotel and the little touches on the landings.

Elegant terrace overlooking Funchal and bay

Posted Jun 20, 2014
Pros: Gorgeous terrace. Lovely old building. Small, friendly, feel. Central to the town and sights.
Cons: Investment to replace tired decor. Wider range of snacks/meals available in the evening. Wifi in rooms.
A converted Victorian mansion, this hotel has a large terrace overlooking Funchal and the bay, adorned with hollyhocks, bougainvillea and bananas, perfect for enjoying drinks from the bar whilst watching the sun go down. Sea view rooms have large original windows with shutters, with the same view. There's a small swimming pool on the roof. Staff were friendly and helpful, very willing to advise on restaurants, and booking tours round the island for me. Most hotels in Funchal are anonymous modern blocks with hundreds of identical rooms far from the centre, strung out along the Esplanade to the west of the town, but Hotel Monte Carlo, though 15 mins walk uphill from the shore, felt very central to the sights of Funchal, and authentically Portuguese, and it has only about 20 rooms. Room prices are low because the hotel does not have luxury facilities - there's no room service, a limited choice of meals available in the evening, and for most of the time you can only access free wifi from the ground floor - not in the rooms. The decor is tired, with some worn carpets and furniture from the 60s and 70s, but the bed was comfortable and the whole hotel is spotlessly clean.

Nice hotel close to town.

Posted Jun 9, 2014
Pros: Staff - proximity to town centre - size of rooms.
Cons: The coffee at breakfast was poor.
Location: Great location - five minutes walk to town centre where there are lots of shops / bars / restaurants / public transport.
We really enjoyed our stay at the Monte Carlo. The room we had was adjacent the pool which was well used by hotel guests. The beds were really comfortable and we both slept well after a long day trekking. The staff were very helpful and friendly and added to the enjoyment of our stay.

Hotel Monte Carlo: Funchal

Posted May 1, 2014
Pros: Character, old school elegance and charm; good staff.
Cons: Good for the price.
Location: Very good location: the entre of Funchal a 5 minute walk away: local attractions i the Quinta das Cruses, Universo da Memorias, Convento Santa Clara.
Lovely old hotel with a good terrace for breakfast (and evening drinks from the bar) and roof top pool. Good value. Full of character and comfortable accommodation: only a short walk (hilly) down into the centre of Funchal, and parking at the hotel or nearby. Really good base for all aspects of Madeira and thankfully away from the hotel zone. Staff are very good and helpful: Don't expect a modern hotel, old school, or retro if you prefer, elegant and lovely.

We stayed in this hotel for two nights to see Funchal before moving on to a coastal resort. The room was small but clean and comfortable. It's up a steep hill but has a lovely view from the terrace. The decor is dated but quirky and the staff were friendly and helpful.Vi
