Excellent base to explore MaderiaPosted Feb 23, 2014
Pros: Excellent position, room with view and balcony, spotlessly clean, helpful staff
Location: About 30 minute walk from centre of Funchal. With a car, explored the island.
From the minute we arrived the hotel and its staff lived up to its 5* status. An excellent base to explore Maderia. The staff were always helpful and attentive, the hotel facilities excellent - even the infinity pools in February! - and the food was well presented and used many local recipes and ingredients.

Excellent experiencePosted Jan 7, 2014
Pros: Rooms, location, pool, service and personnal in general were very nice.
Cons: Buffet arrangements, food is a bit boring overall - service is a bit of a chaos sometimes, short on personnal I reckon.

Pros: The location and lovely views. Good choice of restaurants to meet all tastes.
Cons: Rooms were tired and need of refurbishment, also the indoor pool area needs attention. There was no dress code for the main restaurant at night.
Location: Excellent location approx twenty minute walk to centre of Funchal. Plenty of restaurants close by . Good pub opposite with live entertainment.
We had previously stayed at the hotel when it was the Crown Plaza and it was all you expected from a five star hotel. This visit some areas were disappointing and some standards had slipped, however it is a lovely hotel.

Truly stunning.... againPosted Nov 19, 2013
Pros: Everything esp the pools and the food is amazing. As is the cocktail bar!!
Location: Plenty of trips available from nearby operators and bus into Funchal if you dont want to walk but taxis are cheap anyway
We decided to return here after such a wonderful holiday last year and were not disappointed. You do not have to move from the hotel if you dont want to as your every need is catered for. That said we did of course. We will be returning next year and not stay anywhere else on Madeira. It is truly wonderful

Love this hotelPosted Nov 7, 2013
Pros: Location, grounds and pools and staff
Cons: Maybe the indoor pool could be warmer and the dinner to start at an earlier time of 6:30 pm
Location: Nice walks some shopping
Had a wonderful time second stay this year. Again no complaints staff are so polite and helpfully . Can't wait to go back just to stay in that hotel.

Big, fun resort with balconies overlooking the ocePosted Oct 31, 2013 on Hotels.com
Very nice property. Lots of families with small kids and plenty of things to keep all ages busy. Nice included buffet breakfast. Two big swimming pools, plus kiddie pool. 20 minute walk to Funchal was easy and fun and many other tourists were doing the same thing. Public buses also available for anyone who might have trouble doing the walk. Taxis available but can be pricey.

Great view, good valuePosted Oct 20, 2013
Pros: Clean, comfortable, and large rooms at a fair price with an amazing view.
Cons: The hallways in the room areas could be spruced up for better presentation.
Location: Close to the ocean, lots of nearby restaurants, not too far from downtown.
The view was fantastic with a private balcony overlooking olive trees framed by the sea. Breakfasts (included) were more than adequate, as were the lunches. The room was large and very clean. Staff were friendly, helpful, and communicated well with English-speaking guests. The many nearby restaurants provided diversity and reasonable prices. The only negative I have to report is the somewhat dark and dated carpeting in the hallways. Most public spaces are marble. Overall, it was a nice hotel but it didn't present as a 5-star, but neither was it priced like a 5-star. I'd call it a 4-star at a 3-star price. Nice pools by the sea and swimming in the ocean for those who wanted to take the plunge.

Perfect escapePosted Oct 14, 2013
Pros: I liked the relaxed atmosphere in the hotel, although the hotel was big it did not feel impersonal.
Location: We didn't do too much as it was only a short break but we did go into Funchal Old Town and also up to Montes Palace which was beautiful.
I stayed in the Vidamar on a short break after our wedding and found the hotel to be everything we wanted and more. Clean, the staff were friendly and it was an extremely relaxing break after a hectic couple of months. I was so impressed that I have already started looking into staying there early next year and would recommend the hotel to anyone considering Madeira as a holiday destination and it didn't blow the budget!

4 Star Hotel - Not 5 StarPosted Oct 12, 2013 on Hotels.com
Vidamar is a 4 star hotel but not the 5 star hotel as indicated by others. My rating is based on my experience of working internationally for the past 30 years as an oil and gas professional. During that time I have been fortunate to stay in truly 5 star accomodation in various parts of the world. What differentiates 4 from 5 star hotels is the attention to detail. At Vidamar do not expect flowers in your room, a welcome note from the manager, a welcome drink at reception on arrival after your long journey, a complimentary bottle of wine, a bed turn down service, shuttle bus service into Funchal etc. The hotel restaurants do not rate highly on Tripadvisor so some more work to do there. We ate at the hotel buffet on the first night on the basis of that experience spent the rest of our holiday eating outside! The hotel itself is minimalist, with an attempt at Scandanavian interior design. Unfortunately it does not really work here as it feels cold and unwelcoming, almost as if they ran out of money for the interior design! The pools are not heated (unlike at The Cliff Bay) which is not a problem when it is sunny but less pleasant when overcast. The inside pool area is really not very inviting. The rooms are clean but our patio furniture was so perished through sun exposure it was crumbling. In summary, 4 stars for clean hotel, clean rooms, good breakfasts.
