“Comfortable Hotel, Beautiful Location, Indifferent Staff”

While quite luxurious for Mae Hong Son and with a beautiful setting overlooking the river and mountains, the staff at this Hotel are at best indifferent and at worst quite unfriendly. As the Hotel is about 4 km from the town centre, you will need transport (although the Hotel does run a rather infrequent shuttle service). They seemed reluctant to call me a tuk tuk so I had to hire a motor bike in town to solve the problem. I attempted to book a day tour of the surrounding region, but their booking agent initially quoted me over 2 times the going rate, so I simply walked away and took off for the mountains on my bike. To top it off, when I checked out, the reception staff attempted to charge me a second time, even though I had pre-paid on-line. While obviously a simple mistake, no apologies or explanation was forthcoming from the staff. They just shrugged their shoulders, walked away and left me standing at the counter, bill in hand!

Area recommendations

Visit the temple and lake area in the centre of town. Lots of good restaurants and bars there too. Hire a motor bike or a car and driver and head off north west towards Mae Aw on the Burmese border. On the way visit the waterfall, the Royal Summer Palace and the Kuomintang settlement at Mae Aw for a great Chinese meal. While there is a touristy Paduang or long-neck village about 12 km from Mae Hong Son, there is a genuine Paduang village about 30 km WNW, adjacent to a refugee settlement centre. Bit tricky to find, but well worth the effort. At the end of the village stands a little wooden St Josephs church and adjacent is a ritual ground complete with mysterious totemic poles.

“Quiet atmosphere”

We stayed only one night. If you stay in Mae Hong Son for longer days, this will be a good location for any activity and has a relaxed atmosphere.

Area recommendations

Tham pla; very interesting to see many fish gathering in a narrow cave. Phu Klon Mud Spa; I tried Mud Face Pack. It worked. Very refreshing. You can enjoy a hot spring pool, too.

Getting there

I drove to Mae Hong Son from Chiang Mai via Pai. It took us almost 4 hours. It was a fun to drive all mauntainous winding roads with 700-800 curves,but maybe too much for a day drive. It would have been more fun if we stopped at Pai on the way.
