Makokou Vacations

"Bienvenue!" Makokou in Gabon is a great destination if you're looking for pretty rainforest and savannahs far from the well-trampled tourist trail.

Makokou is situated about 240 miles (386 kilometers) east of Libreville, the national capital.

Makokou isn't the only place in this intriguing region that is worth seeing; those withe enough time will be keen to drive a little further out to experience the charms of the surrounding countryside, towns and cities.

No holiday is complete without a bit of down time. Shore fishing is one of the ways they relax here. Here and wildlife watching is another.

Sampling local food is usually so much more than mere sustenance. It offers a way of understanding the regional character. Two of the region's favourite ingredients are bushbutter and mangoes. No journey through Gabon would be complete without ordering a manioc (cassava) or cooked bush meat. Gabon is also the perfect place to enjoy baked banana. Coconut milk is popular drink to enjoy no matter what time it is.

Nothing unlocks hearts and minds in this wonderfully diverse world in the way language can, so be sure to know a few key French phrases before you head off. Coming to grips with just a few key phrases, such as "Je viens de...", which is "I come from...", can make your stay even more pleasant. And, for "What's your name?", you can learn how to say "Comment est-ce que vous vous appelez ?" Why don't you give it a spin!

At the end of your holiday in Makokou, pack up your camera and mementos, spend your last of your Central African francs, and bid Au revoir / À bientôt (farewell) to this special place.
