Incredible value for moneyPosted Jan 5, 2014
Pros: Pros Location Beach Pools Beach beds Staff Clean rooms with warm showers
Cons: Cons Cost of food (but it wasn't insane) Comfort of bed (they should invest in some new pillows and mattresses but we slept fine)
Location: We stayed at the hotel.
If you are looking for a cheap hotel in Zanzibar and are worried about how cheap this one is, don't be - you should go ahead and book. The views are incredible and the pools are perfect. We were totally relaxed and didn't have any real complaints. We were shocked by how nice the hotel was for the price...it's just so hard to find that kind of value!

Nice hotel by the beach in secluded areaPosted Jan 2, 2014
Pros: Peaceful area, beautiful beach, two refreshing saltwater swimming pools, friendly staff
I stayed at La Madrugada Beach Resort for ten nights including Christmas. On Christmas Eve they had local performers do an evening show with drumming, singing, dancing and other surprises. Just a note for future visitors, prices are all in US dollars, the exchange rate for Tanzanian Shillings is fair. It is most economical to pay in cash with US dollars. Credit cards are accepted with a 5% surcharge.

Schwandts in Makunduchi, ZanzibarPosted Dec 31, 2013
Pros: The hotel staff is very friendly and hospitable. The food is very good and the prices are almost the same comparing to other local hotels/restaurants.
Cons: The menu in the restaurant could have more options (i.e. fish and African cuisine, fruit). Also it should offer fresh juices with local fruit.
Location: No restaurants or shops around but the villages of Jambiani and Page are not very far and have some shops and restaurants.
The location, Makunduchi, is very calm. It's perfect for those who want some rest. The hotel facilities are simple but clean, organized and comfortable. I got impressed with the Wi-fi connection in the rooms. It's very good considering the location is far from Stone Town. Not the best connection but quite fast and reliable. The food is very good, tasty and prices are fair. Don't hire tours (Blue Safari, Stone Town, etc.) thru the local hotels because they are more expensive than if you negotiate with a local taxi driver. Most of the taxi drivers can make arrangements for the tours. The swimming pool is excellent.

Very disappointing food. Overpriced. Bathroom was dirty and in need of renovation.
