“Pleasantly surprised by Lola”

I didn't spend much time selecting a hotel for my two-night stay in Malaga, and I lucked out by choosing Room Mate Lola. I picked it for its location: it's very close to the train station (which is an easy ride to the airport) and is only a few blocks from the old part of the city. The hotel itself was relaxed, clean, and comfortable. The first thing I liked was that the reception staff sit behind desks instead of more formal checkin counters. They also dress casually. They were fun yet professional. My room was great. There was lots of space, and everything was spotless, particularly the bathroom. The only negative thing was that my room faced the side of an apartment building, so I kept the curtains drawn the entire stay. My favorite part of the hotel is the "chill room" on the first floor. It houses a couple of comfortable sofas and is a great quiet place to read or catch up on email. Note that there is free (and fast) wifi on the first floor but not in the guest rooms.

Area recommendations
The old part of the city is fascinating. There are great buildings to see and good food to enjoy.
Getting around
The train from the airport is incredibly convenient and cheap. From the airport just get off at the last stop, at the center of the city.

“Nice hotel, poor neighborhood”

No complaints at all with the hotel. Room was clean and comfortable. Within walking distance to downtown shopping and restaurants. Neighborhood is a little seedy, with prostitutes patrolling the streets at night.

“Great hotel”

The hotel was very clean, modern and comfortable. The AC wasn't working on the 2nd floor so they changed us to the 3rd no problem.

“Just Right -- A Comfortable Stay in Malaga”

Breakfast was perfect and was quite tasty. The hotel is very clean and located within short walking distances to everything we enjoyed (shopping, eating, drinking). Beach was about a 20 minute walk, not bad at all as you walk through a beautiful park.

Area recommendations
Shopping district, beach, and lots of interesting historical sites where you can also find some very nice views. Take the Malaga Bike Tour (fun and educational).

“Best. Hotel. Ever.”

Fantastic location. Far enough away from the main street but close enough to walk to everything. Great breakfast (UNTIL NOON!) Nice and quiet. Clean. Barely noticed the cleaners, never intrusive - never knocked on our door to clean the room, they just seemed to get in and out. Walk to the beach was a little far (20-25 minutes) but no big deal. Young girl at the front desk upon check-in was one of the nicest and most accomodating people we dealt with on our whole vacation (wish I got her name). Jose, the young guy at the desk was not quite as helpful (was more interested in what was going on on his computer and barely looked up when you came into the hotel). I actually booked another Room Mate in Madrid (Mario) after staying here. Lola was a way better deal and had a view of the street with a big window. Would definitely recommend this Hotel, once this area is built up more, this hotel will be pricey I think. I would go back tomorrow!!!

Area recommendations
There are a few 'deli's' where you can pop in and they will make you a baguette with jambon with a drizzle of olive oil (way cheaper than the stores). Turn around little corners and listen for the locals speaking Spanish and eat at these places. If you want authentic, stay away from places that have pictures of all their food!! Don't go to Sagrada Famalia on a Sunday, duh.

“Great place to stay in Malaga”

Except for the narrowness of the parking (!!), our stay in Malaga was made totally comfortable thanks to this hotel. The staff was very friendly and helpful; breakfast very nice; the rooms were spacious and clean, the bathrooms modern and pleasant; it seems like the trend throughout Europe nowadays is to skip the complimentary body lotion and provide just one towel per person, but additional ones were available upon request. Walking distance to most of the town and easy access to major routes. We'll be sure to look up Room Mate hotels for future stays.

“Modern and convenient”

The hotel is descreetly located on a small street adjacent to the city centre. The hotel is fresh, bright and modern. The rooms are newly decorated and have all the exepected comforts and features. The buffet breakfast was a high quality continental style with fresh fruit, cold meats and cheeses and a selection of breads and puddings. It is short work to the harbour, the main shopping streets, the Picasso Museum, the Contemporary Art Museum and the palace and castle/fortress.

Area recommendations
Although the Costa del Sol is known for sun and sand, I recommend a stay in the city centre of Malaga for a taste of real Spanish culture. As the birthplace of Picasso there are several museums, exhibits and sites relating to the famous artist. The cathedral is very impressive for those interested in religion or architecture. The shopping is excellent (especially shoes) and there is a vast selection of restaurants and tapas bars for the adventurous diner. Try the many seafood selections! A walk to the lighthouse and further to the adjacent beaches is great after a meal. The bull ring, Roman amphatheatre, Moorish palace and hilltop fortress are also worth a look and display the extensive history of the region.

“Great small hotel in Malaga”

Room Mate Lola is on a small street between and running parallel to two very busy and central streets. Many restaurants, shopping areas and tourist venues are within easy reach. The hotel is a "boutique" hotel with approximately twelve rooms on each of four or five floors. The room was spotless, bath well outfitted with tub/shower and bedroom clean and comfortable. The mattresses are quite firm, but fine. Breakfast is substantial and tasty. No doubt the most memorable part of my stay was the front desk staff who do anything to make your time in Malaga easy and enjoyable. Directions are provided, taxis are called and restaurants recommended. Not a site for those looking for a late-night experience and large hotel bar, Room Mate Lola provides a safe, quiet and comfortable haven while staying in a busy and interesting city.

Area recommendations
Malaga appears to have several small neighborhoods - some very commercial, some historical, a port and many residential areas. I recommend walking through the city during the day and night to see what the Spaniards enjoy. A tour bus can provide a quick introduction to the city; there is plenty to do in Malaga.
Traveler's tip
Malaga is easily reached by the fast Spanish train - 2.5 hours from Madrid. Taxis are inexpensive; shopping and restaurants are plentiful. While November was cool, it was a great time for tourists. Roasted chestnuts are available on street corners and the Christmas lights appeared during my stay. Gibraltar made a great day trip - easy to arrange and well worth the time. Picasso's Museum is definitely worth a few hours.

Malaga, Spain: One of Spain’s biggest ports and the provincial capital, Malaga’s city centre has undergone a major facelift in recent years to attract many tourists who would usually pass straight to the local resorts. The historic centre features narrow streets surrounding the iconic lopsided cathedral. Plaza Merced is the birthplace of artist Pablo Picasso. Above it all sits the hilltop fortress of the Alcazaba.
