La Casa Di Lucio Hotel Relais

Via San Pietro Caveoso 66, Matera - Map
"Absolutely the best place to stay in Matera"
La Casa di Lucio is simply fantastic from start to finish. The location in Matera is perfect, right in the middle of the Sassi (in the heat of summer, it was nice to be able to duck into your room for a half hour to cool off). Woven into the labyrinth of winding passages, each room seems to have its own outdoor entrance, and mine had a small terrace with tables and chairs. The rooms are in renovated buildings and give you an idealized version of what Matera architectural spaces were like (without the animals, of course): my room, which was five steps down from its front door, had the tell-tale, irregularly shaped vaulted stone and masonry ceiling (check out the pics on their website). The rooms have modern furnishings and fixtures (including a combo waterfall/sunflower showerhead in a large walk-in shower), so this feels more like a W Hotel than a rustic B&B. The breakfast is a banquet, the staff are courteous and generous, and the rooms are sparkling clean. And the best part: it's an incredible bargain compared to the price of most 4 star hotels in Italy, many of which are not nearly as nice or unique. If you have a bigger budget, stay at its sister hotel Regia Corte, which is even nicer. The Regia Corte's restaurant is very good, too, and the dining terrace has incredible views of the city, the ravine and the natural caves in the national park. This really is one of the nicest, and most reasonably priced hotel experiences I've had in Italy. It was perfect.

"Interesting hotel in a unique location"
The hotel is designed as a cave similar to the Sassi of Matera. It is adjacent to the Sassi caves allowing you to easily walk there. They have a terrace overlooking the site. There are large sitting areas in the lobby with all the rooms entering off those areas.

Sextantio Le Grotte Della Civita

Via Civita 28, Matera - Map
"A wonderful and inviting place"
We absolutely loved our cave-room at Sextantio Le Grotte Della Civita. The room was beautifully prepared for our arrival, with candles lit and fresh fruit and water waiting. We found the room warm, inviting and wonderfully comfortable - and interesting, too, given the rich history of Matera and the sassi. The staff were kind and helpful at every turn. I hope to have a chance to come back.

"Very comfortable hotel."
We stayed 3 nights at this hotel and had a very pleasent stay. Loved Matera! The room was spacious and comfortable and the buffet breakfast had a good selection. There was ample room for parking right on the premises. The hotel is located about 2 kilometers out of town-not convenient if you don't have a car. I think there is a nearby bus stop but not sure how often it runs.

Excellent location overlooking the Sassi. Breakfast is plentiful and very good, staff is helpful. Hotel is near a number of excellent restaurants. If you are able to travel there for Matera's feast day, July 2 do so, it will be one of the most unusual, happy and exciting days of any journey.

"Fascinating hotel with rooms nestled in the rock."
Lovely room in an unusual but very pleasing hotel with a magnificent location with great views across the gorge. The room was large, well-furnished and very comfortable although it would have benefitted from a bit more air conditioning. The food in the restaurant was very good and the staff very courteous. Breakfast was good too.

"Stylish hotel"
Phone the hotel to get directions as your sat nav may take you to completely the wrong place. But when you arrive it is fabulous. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful. We were upgraded to a junior suite at check-in. The hotel is steeped in history but has been stylishly renovated. The view from our terrace was beautiful. Breakfast is fantastic. The hotel is centrally located. We booked a guide at reception and would recommend that. We could not fault anything.

In the Matera province of the Basilicata region, the town of Matera is famous for its sassi districts, or dwellings carved out of the caves it is built upon.
