Be careful what you ask for . . .

Posted Mar 8, 2015
Pros: The room on the 8th floor, and the spectacular ocean views!
Cons: Communication and integrity, if you tell someone over the phone that what they have requested is guaranteed, then live up to what you say.
Location: Duke's Restaurant a short walk away has awesome food.
We looked at the wonderful pictures of the rooms over the internet (5 months previously) and chose to stay at the Mahana. We assumed that every room had a couch like the pictures showed. Decided to call the next day to make sure, but were told that we would have to upgrade to get a couch. Said we would like to upgrade right away, so were told to fill in and sign a form called a "Hookipia?" and to email it back to them that would guarantee our upgrade. Which we did. Then I called them to confirm, yes they got the form. Then I asked not to be on the ground floor, anywhere from 2 to 12. They also they confirmed would be fine. When we arrived at the hotel (in the middle of the night) surprise surprise, they couldn't find the form. And they had no record of my many phone calls asking for a room on a higher floor, and of course the tiny ground floor room that they had guaranteed just for us was the last available room in the whole hotel. We were not impressed, not at all. The ground floor unit was grungy, and in need of a total reno. We didn't even unpack, no room and the floor felt dirty. After two days they did manage to move us up to the 8th floor. And I have to say that that room was excellent! Like night and day. So at least our stay ended on a good note.

great location on the ocean.

Posted Jan 31, 2015
Pros: that it was on the beach, the view from our room was fantastic and the beach was great for walking.
Cons: we were told that the people who were above us (making the noise late at night) were owners and there was nothing the staff could do to rectify this.
Location: we went to Dukes a couple of times and spent a lot of time in Lahaina town.
we originally had a room on the 2nd floor and for the first 8 days if was very quiet, then we asked to move to another room as our upstairs neighbors started to move their furniture around between 11pm-1am. We were moved to the 8th floor and were happy with how quiet it was. We were very pleased with being right on the ocean and the location of the hotel with respect to the other hotels (especially enjoyed walking on the beach to go to Duke's restaurant).

Upgraded and loved the view!

Posted Jan 27, 2015
Pros: I liked this spot way better than some of the other resorts I saw. Good parking, every room has a ocean view, and didn't seem as congested.
Cons: A bar near the pool. :)
Location: Duke's Beach House is just a walk down the way. Lovely atmosphere.
We walked into the lobby exhausted from a LONG travel day. The front desk girl was so friendly and sharp. We ended up getting upgraded to a 2 bed/2 bath from a 1 bed/bath. I think the square footage was larger than our last house. We just walked around the room in awe with the space, amenities, and VIEW from both the lanai and living room area. All the staff was nice. The only 2 very minimal things were they were doing construction while we were there, so was a lot of noise, but that's necessary. The other thing was they shut down shuffle board at 5pm, which seemed oddly early for me, but not a huge issue.

Saw whales and turtles everyday

Posted Jan 19, 2015
Pros: We loved the beach front. Great for sunbathing, snorkeling, or paddle boarding. We watched whales and turtles from our lanai.
Location: There are malls and historic sites close by, Also lots of restaurants
We had a small but nice kitchen that helped us save money with a grocery store right across the street. This hotel is kind of old but redone and very clean. Staff was friendly and it had free movies to rent. The ocean is just steps from the lobby and there is a pool as well. Great location and not too busy or cramped. We had a wonderful time.

Quiet hotel - extremely close to beach.

Posted Dec 20, 2014
Pros: Quieter than other neighboring resorts. Only beach front suites in hotel. All in all very nice and we would return.
Cons: Obvious flaws (gaps in floor boards) should be repaired. It has been some time since the air conditioning grills were cleaned.
For the high price of the condo there were some shortcomings - very large gaps in the hardwood floor and a repaired glass lamp shade which promptly broke when touched. Desk staff were super, cleaning staff not so much.

Great views of the beach!

Posted Dec 15, 2014
This was our first time on Maui. I highly recommend staying in the Kaanapali Beach area. Even though this hotel is right on the beach, you really can't swim there. But you only have to walk about 150 yards in either direction. The water is so clear that we could see sea turtles swimming under the waters surface from our 7th floor lanai. Be sure to take the short walk to Duke's Beach House. The food there is the best!

Posted Dec 2, 2014
Cons:
Location: Laihana

Nice resort but also undergoing renovations

Posted Dec 1, 2014
Pros: Good grounds, nice kitchen, view from the room, decent snorkeling off the shore.
Cons: The renovations need to be completed. At this writing (11/30/14), they appear to be about half way through and have been in progress since March 2014.
Location: Snorkeling off the shore. Proximity to Lahaina. Duke's restaurant just south of the Aston is very good.
Very nice resort and grounds. However, when we arrived, we asked if there was any construction going on and were told 'no'. It turns out that the entire resort has been undergoing external renovations since March 2014 (we went in November). Our second-floor room's lanai had plywood extending out, covering the lattice porch below, as well as a window washer-style man lift parked on it. The next day, we had workers right outside our lanai followed by drilling into the side of the building. After bringing this to the front desk's attention, we were quickly moved to a section of the resort where renovations had been completed, and were placed on a higher floor (9th). After relocating, the stay was much better. The condo was mostly clean with a good kitchen. The view from the West windows is awesome. We saw turtles coming within 25 feet of shore on a daily basis. Good, clean BBQ grills in the pool area (which we made use of).

The hotel had an excellent view of the ocean.

Posted Nov 20, 2014
Pros: The room.
Cons: Should've been told about the construction before getting there. And the desk staff needs to be educated on other travel options other than cabs.
Location: Excellent location. Best part was the Trip to Hana. Very educational and beautiful. The old Lahaina Luau was very boring.
The view was excellent. The room was clean and spacious with a lovely kitchen. The only drawbacks were that the pool was very small. And the staff at the desk was not helpful when we were trying to figure out transportation. When we inquired how to get to the hotel from the airport, the only option they gave us was getting a cab. It cost us over $100 for the ride. Later, when we wanted to go shopping, again they told us they could call us a cab. When we inquired about any shuttles or buses, they told us that none of them stopped at this hotel. Another person staying there overheard our conversation and told us about the bus line and where we could get on it and that it only cost $4 for an all day pass. Then later we found out about the shuttle that is free and stops at another hotel that's really close. We were angry at all the money we spent on cabs the first couple days. Could've rented a car for a week on the cab money we spent. Also, the hotel was being refurbished and there were jackhammers and pounding going on during the day on the outside of the building, removing the cement on the building before they replaced it. It was very loud. No napping during the day. We spent most of our days at the hotel pool next door.
