Pros: Beautiful beach, lovely view from lanai. Beautiful gardens/atrium.
Cons: Pool area is a bit small.
Location: Location is removed from the busyness of Kihei area. Quite isolated and very quiet. Beaches nearby are stunning.
Beautifully kept grounds and atrium around the hotel. Staff were very helpful, very friendly and accommodating. Beach was lovely and perfectly safe. Snorkelling was good nearby.

Stayed 3 Weeks Here

Posted Mar 23, 2015
Pros: We liked the friendly staff, especially those working the breakfast buffet. We also liked the hotel grounds as they were well maintained.
Cons: They should definitely fix the elevators, and in bad weather (yes, it happens in Maui) do something about the area for the breakfast buffet.
Location: The location is quite a distance from other hotels and restaurants, so having a car is worth while if staying here.
This was our fifth time to Maui and we decided to try a different hotel this time and booked the Makena Golf and Beach Resort. We enjoyed our stay at this hotel, although they gave us a room at the far end of one of the wings which was a long way for us to go from the elevator since my wife uses a walker. Only one of the elevators to this wing worked, and even it at times didn't go up to the 5th floor where our room was located. We had read that the cabanas by the pool were free, but when we went down to the pool the staff informed us that you had to pay for the use of the cabanas. The lounges by the pool had pads, which was nice, and they supplied towels and covers for the lounges. We thought the hotel grounds were very well maintained and were very nice. We booked the buffet breakfast but encountered bad weather which made it hard to enjoy the food as it got cold very fast as it was very windy even in the building.

A two star hotel in disguise as a 4 star hotel.

Posted Mar 22, 2015
Pros: The staff were very friendly and eager to help. The structure of the building was very beautiful and nice. The restaurant of the hotel was good.
Cons: The furniture of the rooms, lobby, restaurant need an update. The beds and its linen in need to be new.
Location: The hotel is not near anything so a car is very necessary. But the hotel has a free shuttle to the shopping complex which could be used often.
When the time came to go to Maui this year I looked for a hotel that is out of the way of the tourists and quiet. As I was browsing Expedia I came across this hotel. The photos looked great. The structural design of the hotel looked like a 5 star, so I decided to book it. As usual when booking a room I pick the most expensive of the room line up with an ocean front view. When we arrived the bell person made a smart comment about our luggage. I let that go and went straight to the front desk to check in. The wonderful young lady who quickly got me a room and we were off to our room. When we opened the door the smell of dated wood and carpet hit us hard. But I did not let that get in the way. I went straight to the balcony to look at the view from my ocean front room. As I looked out I saw a driveway in front of us and a glimpse of the ocean to the left. I rushed to the front desk the nice young lady and her even nicer manager and I was able to get the room I had reserved. The furniture in the room is very outdated and old, the bed is very old and soft, and the bathroom decor is very outdated. The hotel was built in the 80s and the decor stayed the same without an update. The pool cabanas are old and the color from it is very faded. There is lots of rust all around everything that is metal. The pool water was not heated and water was cold. The building structure is beautiful and has a lot of potential. It screams, “Please take care of me” some one out to listen.

This hotel has a great location and a great beach

Posted Mar 9, 2015
Pros: We loved the beach location. Everyone was very nice.
Cons: Smoking areas far from complex. Update the rooms. The shower controls were confusing. Free Kona coffee in lobby. Not a Staubucks fan.
Location: The running routes are amazing hills. Love them. Great snorkeling and would love to scuba dive there. Great view of Molokini.
We only needed one night. We checked in early. Our room wasn't ready so we got an upgraded room( no charge) with an amazing ocean view. We also, received a free Sunday breakfast buffet coupon. Our room was clean and bed was comfy. The in room coffee was very good. The facility is older than many of the other other hotels nearby. If it were updated it would really shine. Everyone was wonderful. There were many families around it still seemed very quiet. We would return. Parking is FREE! The valet parking is free as well just remember to tip . We LOVED the beach location. Lots of reefs to snorkle. Great beach! Smoking is allowed to close to the entrance. I tried to wait for my husband in the lobby but was driven away by the cigarette smoke coming in. The smoking area should be far from any entrance.

Service was fantastic, not too crowded!

Posted Mar 6, 2015
Pros: Service, drinks, and the private beach
Cons: Not anything really
Location: fantastic location - big beach, snorkeling, shopping in Wailea, the Marriott's luau
While Makena may seem dated compared to the other resorts in Wailea, it more than made up for it in service & charm. The fact that it was less crowded was great! Always room at the pool, a chair at the pool bar (all the bartenders are fantastic!) or space at the beach. Concierges were always extremely helpful, and the breakfast buffet was a great way to start each day! We dearly hope to visit again.
