Pros: Close to great beach
Cons: Bathroom stank

Power was out for many hours. Expected this class of hotel to have backup generator.

Great hotel Awesome Staff right on beach

Posted Aug 11, 2014
Pros: Beach access was wonderful on one of the best beaches on the island. The view from our room was amazing. Loved the 20 min boatride to Molokini.
Location: Kind of a secluded area, but just a short drive up to Wailea and Kihei for restaurants and shopping.
Checked in on Saturday afternoon, was greeted with a shell necklace and an offer to take care if the bags while we checked in. The desk staff and Concierge were wonderful. The beach hut was well stocked and the staff very knowledgeable about equipment and what we needed to enjoy ourselves. We were there during the hurricanes that came through, they took every precaution to assure our safety.

Power outage

Posted Aug 11, 2014
The only resort in that area with no power during Isell which was reduced to only40 ml/ hr wind. The wind lasted 2 hours but power went out for 15 hours. For a resort with no power back up, I do not recommend this hotel.

Aloha, we are sorry to hear that your stay was so greatly affected by Tropical Storm Iselle and Julio. Maui as whole is fortunate that the storms were not as bad as predicted; however, Makena still experienced strong winds that uprooted more than 30 trees on the resort property, one of which unfortunately knocked down an integral power line source to the resort. We relied on Maui Electric Company to bring in new poles and to restore lines to the Makena power grid as quickly as possible. However, with over 8,000 homes on Maui experiencing power outages (many of the outages outlasting Makena’s) there was a delay in resuming power. During storm preparations, our primary concern is the safety and security of our resort guests and employees and we are glad to report no injuries among those under our care. Throughout this period our management and staff stayed on-site working to secure the resort property while continuing operations and providing guests with as many amenities as possible, with the limitations of emergency generator power and with many of our staff working 16+ hours without sleep or rest. We are sorry to hear that this unfortunate and out-of-the-ordinary situation was not as comfortable as you would have hoped and sincerely apologize for the inconveniences that the storms may have caused. We thank you for taking the time to provide feedback on your experience and your candor is appreciated. Mahalo and Aloha from the Makena Staff.

Away from the crowds.

Posted Aug 9, 2014
Pros: Quiet. Secluded. Relaxing environment. Great beach. Shuttle service. Friendly staff.
Cons: Hot tub. More food choices.
The hotel is relatively isolated, so if you are looking for a quiet, relaxing retreat, this is perfect. In general, the staff was very friendly. The pool is a large circular pool with a smaller kiddie pool next to it. It was a nice pool, but I would have expected something a little more creative for a resort in Maui. The hot tub appears to have been an after-thought, as it is an above ground home-type spa. Having said that, the pool area is relaxing with plenty of chairs and shade. The bar drinks are tasty, but expensive with very little alcohol in them. The resort is on a great beach. You can rent paddle boards and kayaks right there and the snorkeling is good right from the beach. There's a Starbucks on-site. They loan bikes, but they aren't maintained. The tires were low on air and they didn't have a pump, but I rode it anyway and it was fine. There are plenty of nice places to walk from the hotel. The free shuttle will take you to the mall and restaurants. Ask for the restaurant list...I didn't get it until right before I left. The hotel will help you arrange transportation to and from the hotel, and the transport was right on time both ways. Overall, I liked the hotel. A few more food choices would be nice. I would go back.

Love, loved it

Posted Aug 6, 2014
Pros: The kind staff, the clean spaces, the gorgeous beach access, the delicious breakfast and the concierge service
Cons: Nothing
Location: Rent a car! Maui is a driving friendly island. Beach on site was great, but to get anywhere other than Wailea shops, you will need a car!
What a lovely hotel. I couldn't be happier with the experience there. The staff was knowledgeble, kind, helpful and polite. Our room was always in excellent shape and we never lacked for anything. We were always treated with respect and consideration

Amazing hotel and staff

The staff were amazing at this hotel. Every room had a view of the ocean. We were steps from the beach, which had get snorkeling. We went with friends who go every year; they said this is the best deal on Maui.

Had a wonderful visit!

Posted Jul 30, 2014
Pros: Beautifully maintained grounds. We went to a more expensive hotel for a luau, and the bare minimum was done to the grounds.
Cons: Nothing!
Location: Many tidal areas for kids to explore. The beach and pool and hot tub were great. It was an out-of-the way place so a little driving was needed to shop
The hotel and grounds had the feel of a private resort. Beautifully landscaped, flowering trees everywhere. Our room had a better bed than I do at home. They were SO comfortable. Everything was clean. Restaurant food was good also. The hotel's beach was really nice and very easy to get to. There were areas to swim and snorkel. I spent quite a bit of time snorkeling and saw lots of great sea life.
