Older but very nice hotel on beachPosted Mar 2, 2014
Pros: Location and the staff.
Cons: Hotel restaurants were just OK.
Location: Removed from much of the tourists things to do. But very short drive to Kihei.
Makena is somewhat removed from much of the tourist scene on Maui, which is nice if you're just going there to "chill". The hotel beach is very nice, and not too crowed. Not far at all from "Big Beach". The hotel staff couldn't have been friendlier.

Nice but datedPosted Mar 1, 2014
The hotel was quiet. Almost dead actually. Seems like the hotels in walking distance to the shopping center have stolen all the business. More of a spot for seniors than a young couple or people with kids. Very small pool, not much poolside dining options. But it was right on the beach. The room was quiet and the view was good. Bed was great and we slept well. The only really out of place thing was the bathroom. The toilet seat was disgusting. Old, yellowed, and looked like they stole it out of a truck stop.

Nice hotel, friendly staff, close to amenitiesPosted Feb 28, 2014
Pros: Friendly, reasonably priced, lots of activities
Cons: The uniforms of the valets. They were ill fitting.. Lots of bugs/mosquitos.
Location: Beach close by. There are lots of walking, jogging trails and snorkelling lessons were great.
Liked it a lot. You are welcomed with a clean, cool facecloth and the traditional Hawaiian beads. The concierges were helpful and so were the valets. When I was waiting for the airport shuttle, the valets called the shuttle service when they were 10 minutes late, and without me having to say anything.

Wonderful hotel with friendly staffPosted Feb 27, 2014
We loved our stay here. The staff was as courteous as can be...we visited some other four star resorts in the area for dinners, spas, etc, and Makena's staff remains the most helpful and courteous. The building itself is older but has been renovated. Easy access to what is essentially a private beach since it is far off the beaten path in south Maui. The bar and grill had a can't-miss Sunday brunch, well worth the price. Beautiful views from our room. Would definitely stay again!

Very nice hotel close to the beach.Posted Feb 19, 2014
We had a great week staying at this facility. It is a very nice location that is quiet and close to a great beach. The staff was helpful to our every need. Our only problem was with the food and slow service at the on site restaurants. We thought that the food was mediocre , so mostly ate elsewhere. We did like the breakfast buffet, but thought it kind of expensive.
It's really basicPosted Feb 18, 2014
The hotel is really basic and it's way over priced for the conditions. I would never stay here again

Beautiful locationPosted Feb 18, 2014
Pros: The views from the hotel are fantastic! We saw several beautiful sunsets from the beach and our room.
Cons: More casual dining choices would have been nice so we didn't have to leave the hotel as often.
Location: The location is a bit more remote than other hotels which makes this an excellent location. It is easy to drive to Wailea and Kihei however.
Our family has made many trips to Maui and stayed in a variety of locations. We have always had great experiences with hotels and condos, but this was the best. The hotel is located on a beautiful beach for swimming and snorkeling. The property has lovely gardens and ocean views. The rooms are very comfortable. The staff at the Makena Beach and Golf Resort is fantastic! Absolutely everyone was helpful and friendly. We learned about Maui from the bar tenders one afternoon of relaxing at the pool bar. We always received a friendly “Welcome back” every time we returned to the hotel. Having the Kai Kanani right off the beach of the Makena Beach and Golf Resort was so convenient. We just had to walk out to the beach to go on a whale watching tour. Dining options at the hotel are a bit limited and somewhat expensive. Having a more casual and lower cost option for dinner would have been nice. The breakfast buffet was $28, but the food was very good. We also had some of the menu items for breakfast and all were quite good. We will defiantly stay at the Makena Beach and Golf Resort for our next visit to Maui.

BEAUTIFUL LOCATIONPosted Feb 17, 2014
Pros: BEAUTIFUL ROOMS. LOVELY VIEW OF OCEAN. HELPFUL STAFF.
The hotel and location were everything we expected from reviews that we had read. We are so glad we stayed in the southern location rather than up in Kanapali. It was much more peaceful and less touristy. Beach was smaller but beautiful and we snorkled and swam with sea turtles. Whales could be seen breaching regularly from the beach and our lanai.A little bit of Paradise.
