Beautiful, family friendly hotel, on the beach

Posted Aug 29, 2014
Pros: Bright room, huge balcony, gorgeous views. On the beach!!
Location: On the beach. Snorkel, boogie board, SUP right there! They have free bikes you can borrow. Lots of other beaches and shopping nearby.
First of all, the hotel is gorgeous. Comfortable, bright, clean, flowers and waterfalls everywhere. My kids (both 11) were given $20 credits per day to spend at the hotel for lunch, boogie board and snorkel rentals, smoothies and shave ice. They were thrilled! The hotel is on the beach. It's a two minute walk out of your hotel door. A very nice, quiet, small beach where there are waves to ride and play in, and reefs full of fish to explore on the sides. It is at the end of the fancy Wailea resort area, but not too far from anything. Nearby is Turtle Town and Makena Beach. The food at the resort is fabulous. We thought the pizza there was better than the pizza at Lahaina Pizza Co, which was voted best on the island (they are very different styles though!) and everything we ate was wonderful. We took SUP lessons in Kihei (not at the resort, but we could have done that if we wanted to,) and our instructor said that many locals go to the hotel for their buffets. Wonderful food! We used the hotel as a base to explore all of Maui and everything (except the road to Hana, of course) was within an hour or two. The staff are so kind and considerate. I can't say enough about how wonderful they were! They are helpful and full of useful information about all aspects of the island. We would definitely stay at the Makena Beach and Golf Resort again (but for ten days instead of a week!)

Beautiful Setting

Posted Aug 29, 2014
Pros: Landscaping, beach, views from the rooms, friendliness of staff.
Cons: New mattresses and carpeting in the rooms and an overall refurbishing of decor.
Location: Love the location at the southwest end of the island and away from the heavy tourist zones. The Wailea Shops are first rate.
Love the location, all the way at the end of the tourist zone of southwest Maui and away from the hoards of tourists, and the beach is one of the nicest on the island. But the hotel, the rooms, the decor are all showing their age, and the choices for dining and entertainment are limited, to say the least. The worst part for me was the mattress in my room, which was like sleeping on a marshmallow, soft and mushy, with very little support, and for a person who has had multiple back surgeries (six, to be exact), it was difficult and close to impossible to get any sleep. The grounds around the hotel are well kept, well designed and landscaped, and absolutely lush and gorgeous in tropical splendor, color, and fragrance. And the staff on every front were friendly, courteous, helpful, and always went out of their way to be accommodating. Ron and Gail are particularly memorable in the friendliness and professionalism..

Wonderful Stay!

Posted Aug 28, 2014
Pros: Location!
Cons: Not much!
What a great stay. We couldn't have asked for more. There were so many positive points for this resort: 1) Friendly and helpful staff. Wonderful customer service. 2) Location. Close enough to the action of Wailea, but positioned on a secluded beach far away from the other large resorts. Easy to get to Big Beach, right down the road. 3) Great value. The price was considerably less than other resorts in the area and our package included a free breakfast buffet. No resort fees. No valet parking charges. 4) Lovely facilities. Beautiful pool. Well appointed, large, rooms. Most rooms with at least a partial ocean view. On site restaurant had great food. We'll definitely be back! Stayed August 2014

It was a great place and the only issue was one day the sink started to leak and by the time we return to our room a few hours later, it was fixed.

Great hotel Awesome Staff right on beach

Posted Aug 11, 2014
Pros: Beach access was wonderful on one of the best beaches on the island. The view from our room was amazing. Loved the 20 min boatride to Molokini.
Location: Kind of a secluded area, but just a short drive up to Wailea and Kihei for restaurants and shopping.
Checked in on Saturday afternoon, was greeted with a shell necklace and an offer to take care if the bags while we checked in. The desk staff and Concierge were wonderful. The beach hut was well stocked and the staff very knowledgeable about equipment and what we needed to enjoy ourselves. We were there during the hurricanes that came through, they took every precaution to assure our safety.

Power outage

Posted Aug 11, 2014
The only resort in that area with no power during Isell which was reduced to only40 ml/ hr wind. The wind lasted 2 hours but power went out for 15 hours. For a resort with no power back up, I do not recommend this hotel.

Aloha, we are sorry to hear that your stay was so greatly affected by Tropical Storm Iselle and Julio. Maui as whole is fortunate that the storms were not as bad as predicted; however, Makena still experienced strong winds that uprooted more than 30 trees on the resort property, one of which unfortunately knocked down an integral power line source to the resort. We relied on Maui Electric Company to bring in new poles and to restore lines to the Makena power grid as quickly as possible. However, with over 8,000 homes on Maui experiencing power outages (many of the outages outlasting Makena’s) there was a delay in resuming power. During storm preparations, our primary concern is the safety and security of our resort guests and employees and we are glad to report no injuries among those under our care. Throughout this period our management and staff stayed on-site working to secure the resort property while continuing operations and providing guests with as many amenities as possible, with the limitations of emergency generator power and with many of our staff working 16+ hours without sleep or rest. We are sorry to hear that this unfortunate and out-of-the-ordinary situation was not as comfortable as you would have hoped and sincerely apologize for the inconveniences that the storms may have caused. We thank you for taking the time to provide feedback on your experience and your candor is appreciated. Mahalo and Aloha from the Makena Staff.
