Birthday Party

Posted Dec 9, 2014
Pros: Location - easy to walk to the village
Cons: Very dated, heating in rooms was old.
Hill House put on a great event to celebrate a friends birthday. The staff was very nice but the facility needs some updating. All in all though a good time was had by all!

Staff was ok, but a bit abrupt. Made us feel not as important because we booked through Expedia. Breakfast was the bare minimum, not a lot of effort. Deferred maintenance needed on the property. Took a long time for the heat in the room to kick in on a cold December night.

This hotel has potential

Posted Nov 29, 2014
Pros: OK view of ocean from the room, gas fireplace in room.
Cons: better control of heat in the room. Update bathroom.
Location: The hotel is a few blocks from Main St in Mendocino
I've heard that there are new owners and I look forward to seeing what they can do with the place. There are elements of class and grandeur and then there some elements that seem outdated and in disrepair.

Nice, until you get to your room!

Posted Nov 6, 2014
Pros: Lobby & bar areas were nice!
Cons: See above
The lobby was pretty! BUT, when we got to our room we were shocked! It looked like they started to make it cute and quant. Then just decided to keep it cheap!! Then the free continental breakfast was a joke!!!!!! VERY, VERY sad!!! It was 8:30 and they were out of coffee! Very basic on bread! White & wheat! No English muffin, bagel etc. Only one kind of muffin! Just as basic as basic can be! Very underwelming!!! With some TLC this place COULD be a really cool place!

No one home!

Posted Nov 5, 2014
Pros: The bar was staffed until 9:00PM and served bar snacks for dinner.
Cons: They either need to get in or get out of the hotel business.
The desk closed at 6:00PM and never reopened while we were there. There was no info about the area. There was no elevator or assistance for the luggage. We were told at check-in that if we didn't return the key there would be a $50 fine but there was no one at the desk in the morning and no drop box. Based on info from another guest we dropped the key at another hotel in town and received a hand-written receipt.

Worn, but formerly grand hotel (now up for auction

Posted Oct 26, 2014
Pros: See abive,
Cons: See above.
Location: See tour books.
The common areas were beautiful, but our room was worn and poorly maintained (there were two holes in the wall behind our bed, and the trim on the walls was dirty and beaten up). Moreover, the lighting was terrible, so it was difficult to read in the room. The breakfast was typical unhealthy chain hotel fare except for the hard boiled eggs and "fresh" fruit (the oranges looked liked they'd been sitting around for months--no excuse for that in California!). The first receptionist who checked us in gave us unclear directions not only on how to find our room in the hotel, but also how to find a restaurant in town. The price of the room was reasonable, and the beauty of Mendocino made up for the shortcomings of the hotel. Stay tuned to see who might buy the hotel.

Interesting hotel on the highest spot in Mendocino

Posted Oct 2, 2014
Pros: The location, generous room size, its rather quirky look. The breakfast room has an excellent look over the sea to the north which is very attractive.
Cons: The breakfast was fairly standard serve-yourself fare. Serve evening meals in the dining room. Some TLC before it is too late.
Location: Wonderful place and a State Park on the shore, to watch the ocean and the wildlife. Quirky vilage, all walkable. On Highway 1 Shoreline Highway.
Booked at fairly short notice (2-3 days) as a place to stay in Mendocino. We wanted to get out and see the town and surroundings so the hotel was not a destination in itself. In fact we arrived in heavy rain, the first for several months, which rather cramped our style, though we did brave it. (I used the iron in the room to remove the dampness from some of our clothes before going ot for dinner!). The rain had passed by morning so we were able to see a bit more
