Hotel close to Monmouth

Posted Apr 15, 2015
Pros: The hotel was everything that was advertised- full marks.
Cons: Nothing comes to mind
Location: I didn't hang about to explore!
Cycling from Weston super Mare to Monmouth I chose this reasonably priced B & B 3 miles south of Monmouth. I turned off the A466 towards Mitchel Troy and found myself cycling ( and walking) up a mountain. Mine host, Derek, informed me that the best route is into Monmouth and out again to avoid the mountain. A cosy room with all facilities, TV, wi-fi, coffee etc. I arrived late at around 7 p.m. not having eaten. Saying that I would wait for breakfast to eat (the nearest pub was a mile up the road, and probably up hill) Rosie kindly me offered two poached eggs on toast which readily agreed to.

I was marching around Monmouth for remembarance sunday. The hotel was 2 miles away which was conveniant. We had arranged to meet at 8am, so the hotel owners made my girlfriend and i breakfast half an hour early. Really friendly hosts.

Unexpected delight

Travelling with a dog usually results in additional cost and less than comfortable rooms. This was spotless, full of character at 450 years old and comfortable. No additional charge fort the dog. Lovely breakfast and free food showereiet location despite being close to the A40 and Monmouth. Lacked nothing and was indeed an unexpected delight.

Good place for a walking holiday

My son and I stayed two days and liked the pleasant atmosphere, attentive hosts, good breakfast and good packed lunches. The beds were comfortable, and our room large (although it smelled a bit damp, but opening the windows did help). The second day the shower did not heat up.

Roomy attic room, although watch your head on the sloping roof. Has small kitchen for guests which was useful.

Could be better

Pros: the beds
Cons: Be friendly it costs nothing
Location: we were there for a wedding so there was no time for sight seeing but the area is beautiful.
The whole experience felt like we were trespassing in the owners home. There was no welcome and we were just shown to our room up two very steep flights of stairs. The owner, well I think he was the owner as he never introduced himself to me, then asked us what sitting at breakfast we would like as their dinning room was small and could not accommodate all guests at the same time. so unless you took the last breakfast option there was no chance of a leisurely meal. The walls of the bedrooms were paper thin and on the second night we heard our neighbours snoring. You could also hear other guests on the same floor walking about in their rooms. On our return to the room on the second night there was a "polite reminder" message on our bed written by the owner asking us to take more care in the shower as a damp patch had appeared on the ceiling of the room below and we were not using the shower properly. I had a look at the fitting of the shower and perhaps some form of sealant needed to be used that would have prevented the lose of water through the gaps in the shower pedestal. On the positive side the bed was very comfortable.
