“It is exactly what they say it is”
This is a great little hotel. Got us all into 1 room for a very nice price 3 double beds, a fridge and micro. Stayed their 2 nights and pretty much slept and showered. That is what they sold me and that is what I got. Convenient to shopping and the HWY 1 is less than a mile away. Rooms were sparse but clean and bathroom was in great shape. For the price, it is better than you would expect. Breakfast is a muffin and juice not complaining, just saying it was enough to tide us over to a place to get some food.
“Hole in the wall”
This hotel is not bad but here are the issues it does have: The towels feel like sandpaper. This hotel owns some super cheap towels. If you stay you might want to consider bringing yourself a nice towel from home. You don't want to use their washcloths. Like I said sandpaper. however shower water pressure was fantastic. The hotel was stinky. I think someone likes to use incense too much. I think they are trying to cover up the super old carpet smell. The furniture and carpet looks like its from the 60's or if your lucky 70's. Make matters worse the carpet is emerald green. Really ugly. Mattress was comfy though. If your planning a romantic trip this will not make your gal's heart pitter-patter. No blowdryer (haven't been to a hotel in years without one so that threw me). Last but not least if your upstairs careful on the stairs. Some of the steps are slanted due to damage. I almost tumbled down them once. Nice staff but the lady at the front has a strong accent. I struggled to understand her half the time. I only spent two nights so these issues weren't the end of the world. However, I would not choose this hotel again if staying longer.
“Thunderbird Montery - Handy Location”
The Thunderbird appears to be a family run business. They are conscientious about keeping the rooms clean & modern. Our room had lots of floor space. There was a refrigerator and microwave. They had complimentary coffee & muffins for breakfast. These would be good enough to hold you over until you could get a proper breakfast. Several places were nearby. The motel is close to several interesting ethnic shops and a large grocery store. You can also walk to the seaside for a walk on a paved trail.
“Won't go back”
See above. Out of a rating 1 - 5, I give it a 2-. People who run the place are very nice, but hotel is a bit rundown and dirty.
“Good Hotel”
good hotel for the price
“Good for the price but dont expect much”
this hotel is ok if you want cheep. But dont expect wnything else. I went on vacation with my sister and when we checked in they opened the door to a room that was filthy. sheets messy pizza boxes in the restroom and used towels on the floor. The hotel did change their room and got them another one. Also the pool looked like a swamp so dont plan on swimming.
“Keep your expectations in line with the price”
This was the third year in a row I've stayed here when in the Monterey area. I'm by myself, so I'm looking for a low price and and relatively clean place and the Gateway Thunderbird Motel fits that need, however I would never stay here with my wife. Everything is kind of old and worn, but I have no problem with that. Yeah, the hotel isn't in a ritzy neighborhood and there's a liquor store a couple of doors up the street so it's not the kind of place you'll want to take a romantic stroll around, but I've frequented the store and have never been hassled or had problems with my car being broken into or anything like that. Bottom line - the place is priced right for my needs and I'd stay there again.
“BAD TO THE BONE”
Same as above
“Thunder from down under.”
To be fair, we booked this room at the last minute for two nights of the Memorial Day weekend. Price was our motivator and I knew kind of what to expect (I didn't expect the Hyatt or even the Holiday Inn) thanks to reviews and because of my own knowledge of the area. Upon check-in, we waited for at least 10 minutes while an elderly woman (whom we had heard call the manager, presumably a family member) watched us. Once he arrived we checked in with no problems. Awkward. Our room was fine. Clean enough, large bed, big t.v., sinkette-area, and separate shower/toilet area. On the not-so-good side: musty smell that comes with years of use; flat, hard bed with flat, hard pillows; tiniest shower area ever; and worn towels the size of a handkerchief. The neighborhood was not great but I didn't feel scared -- and both nights we returned to our room after 9pm. One night our key got de-magnetized (or something) and the night-desk man was super nice and helpful. They made up our room and restocked towels. The housekeepers left (or someone did) a big water bottle on our table that was not ours. That was a little strange. Mainly we were happy to have a room inexpensive enough to afford us two extra, last-minute, days of vacation. I would suggest bringing your own pillow and even a throw-blanket and a towel. I wouldn't necessarily recommend this hotel to anyone but if you find a nice price and you are going to use the room as only a base for sleeping I'd say it's OK.
