“very disappointed”
I was very disappointed with this hotel. We were greeted with a musty oder when we opened the door. The room seemed old and furnishings were worn. The shower leaked. The staff at the breakfast area were unfriendly, unsmiling and seemed like they hated their jobs. Very depressing. I will not stay there again.
“Not worth the high season prices, certainly”
The motel is functional, if austere, and seemed oddly devoid of furniture. There were depressions in the carpet where furniture had presumably been, but aside from the bed, desk, dresser/TV table, and (single!) nightstand, the acres of empty space seemed a little odd. The pipes for an after-market sprinkler system ran along one wall. The location was right, just across a park and the river from downtown, but San Lorenzo Park is a homeless hangout and did not feel safe to cross after dark. Overall, it felt like a cheap motel in all ways except the bill.
“Don't stay here!!!!”
I am very unimpressed with this hotel, it was the noisiest place I have EVER stayed in. The walls were paper thin and they staff allowed the other guests to scream and yell freely apparently. I was only using it for a place to sleep while visiting friends and I did not get any sleep. STAY AWAY!
“Disappointing breakfast service”
We booked this room because it was one of the only rooms available for the 4th of July. We knew it wasn't going to be a 4 star stay. The room had a musty old smell with worn bear spots in the carpet but was clean. The hotel has a nice pool where my children spent most of their time but no bathroom available leaving you to traipse up and down the stairs to your room soaking wet. Walls were paper thin and we could hear the neighbors toilet flush all night long. Probably the most irritating thing was the woman who worked the breakfast bar. She did not greet us when we entered but demanded room number and name as if she were asking for name, rank and serial number. Breakfast consisted of danish, bagels, and lumpy oatmeal. We wanted to take our coffee and danish to our room but were told no food was to leave the dinning room. She continued to watch us like a hawk while we ate our breakfast as if we were going to walk off with the silverware. Her conduct left a bad taste in our mouths. Disappointing after the front desk was nice enough to comp my children toothbrushes and toothpaste because they forgot theirs. Hotel staff need to get on the same page where service is concerned.
“Convenient & fairly-comfy”
Front desk fellow when I checked in was very pleasant. Room had nicer-than-basic amenities [soaps etc], sheets were soft enough, bed seemed a bit worn but otherwise everything was pretty great. Enjoyed the refrigerator. Nice front desk gal at check-out. Would stay again if I needed a room in the area [downtown SC or Seabright].
“Nice pool, nice jacuzzi, decent breakfast, close to downtown”
I knew in advance this property was utilized by young visitors...students & prospective UCSC students. I'm very flexible and easygoing. Property was clean, room was fine. Extremely tiny bathroom...the door left about 1/16th of an inch to the toilet. About 5 inches from toilet to bathtub. The bathtub was so shallow that I couldn't cover my entire (petite 5'3") body with water. The aerating fan was blowing so hard (no way to turn off) that I froze because the front of my body was not submerged in water & receiving mighty blowing action from fan! Walls of room are paper-thin. Pillows are rock-hard. Ocean Street is kinda sketchy. But I wanted to be near downtown & the flea market. So it was excellent in that regard. Just know in advance that you may not get a good night's sleep & certainly not a relaxing bath. If you are a larger person, you may be very uncomfortable in the bathroom! Unfortunately, most hotels/motels in Santa Cruz are fairly rundown, so this isn't the worst place to stay for the money! I might stay here again if I could be guaranteed to NOT be next to rowdy dudes in the room next door who talk at the top of their lungs until 3:30am.
“Will book it again next time.”
We enjoyed our stay very much and Expedia made it all so easy!!!
“This one should be torn down”
We were less than impressed with the University Inn. Evident in the elevator and walkways to the room, and the room itself, investing in upkeep wasn't a priority. While it was a good price relative to the other properties in the area, we wished we had paid $30 more and slept comfortably. We were awakened at 4:45am when the fan motor bearings started to screech. When I mentioned this at the front desk in the morning, she seemed less than interested in noting it. All the walls were made of concrete, which made it pretty quiet but didn't allow for any internet access. We were happy to be back to a Marriott Courtyard the next night.
“University Inn review”
Room is old and tired. "Business Center" is one computer that is charged at a very high rate. Bathroom is ridiculously small and tight.
“Not impressed”
This hotel was very average and exceptionally noisy. The price was outrageous, perhaps because it was graduation weekend for UCSC. If they charge those prices every day, they're criminal!
