Nice hotel, with excellent viewPosted Dec 2, 2013
Pros: location, view, make to order breakfast
Cons: need to install TV inside the room!
Hotel is a little bit hard to find, but other that was worth it. A little bit outside Santa Elena, you have to drive to the city, but the quiteness and amazing view from the rooms more than compensate for that. I would have given 5 starts if it wasn't for the lack of TV inside the room. At 5:30 it's already dark outside, so not much to do. A TV is a must.

Nice view, clean, basicPosted Nov 11, 2013
Nice scenery. Enjoyed breakfast outside. Clean basic room. Great value for what we paid. Not much nice hotel selections in monteverde. This is good for 1-2 night stay if you don't want to spend 4 star prices.

Only Natural Ingredients!Posted Nov 10, 2013
Pros: Solitude, nature at its best. No distractions, with time to think and genuinely converse with others.
Cons: Very little - some cosmetics in one of the bathrooms that I pointed out to Francisco (will check when I come back)
Location: Location explained by Francisco to my family accurately portrayed the logistics of Monteverde - highlighted all to see and do, with recommendations
I was born in Costa Rica, but didn't return for 50 years. After meeting my family 15 years ago, I have been to many, many resorts and beach sites. I asked my family in San Jose about Monteverde, and not one of them had ever been there! So a group of us decided to check it out. Found the Cala Lodge on Expedia and read other peoples' commentaries, and decided to experience it for myself. We had a wonderful time with the natural beauty surrounding our room, especially our 2nd floor balcony where we could sip coffee, read, and get to know one another without the distraction of traffic, media and other distractions. Francisco and Raquel were extremely helpful with information regarding tours, restaurants, and local information. We had a joke that we were going to 'church', but only because it was next to our favorite watering hole!

Awesome service and friendly staffsPosted Aug 19, 2013 on Hotels.com
Raquel (The owner of the hotel) and Joyce are very friendly, sweet and helpful during the whole trip. We are very satisfied with our stay there. The view of our room is excellent, and the free breakfast is great. We see a lot of birds, Agoutis and other wild life that we can’t name it. A little down fall is the wall is a little bit too thin in the back lodge so that we can hear kids next door. Thankfully, they went to bed around 10pm, so no biggy. Funny, how we can't hear any noise from their parents. Since adult voices do not seem to penetrate the wall that well, I will recommend couple to stay in the first building closer to the main lodge. It has smaller rooms and more likely to have smaller group of people. :) Overall, it is a very pleasant stay and I will highly recommend others to stay there.

Very close to all attractionsPosted Aug 6, 2013 on Hotels.com
My stay was a wonderful one. My friends and I were very pleased with the service. Staff was very friendly and welcoming. They were always willing to accommodate us. The hotel is conveniently located close to all the attractions and restaurants as well as shops. The rooms were always clean as was the hotel itself. The receptionist was very helpful. She helped in setting up our activities and transportation. Breakfast was also included and it was always served right away, along with fresh fruit.

Undiscovered ParadisePosted Jul 8, 2013 on Hotels.com
Thought the Cala Lodge is not in regular guide book and maps it was found through recommendations on the Hotels.com website. It is a small but beautiful retreat from the center of town. The rooms boast of beautiful views of the surrounding cloud forest. From our balcony we watched capuchin monkeys play, bats fly, and many other sights. The hotel is set up to work with the environment with it's motion detection pathway lights and low-flow toilets. The rooms are simply but tastefully decorated with a reasonable-sized kitchen. It's a must stay in the area.

Visiting the cloud forest in environmentally sensitive and aware Costa Rica can be challenging. A tourist mecca with atrocious roads to find your way to Santa Elena and crowded plain vanilla tourist glitz when you get there. The Cala Lodge got it right. It is set like an island in the forest. Your room window is feet away from the birds and animals of the Monte Verde with no sense of distraction from the rest of the town. Well appointed, comfortable. A great setting for a visit to the Cloud forest.

Like being in your own private sanctuary!Posted Jun 14, 2013 on Hotels.com
This place is a true gem! The location feels remote, yet is close enough to restaurants and activities to walk, if you don't mind a 5-8 minute hike down some gravel roads (or you can always call a taxi). We saw as many wild animals and birds while hanging out at the lodge eating breakfast, as we did walking through preserved forests. Francisco and staff were very helpful and nice. We stayed five nights there during the beginning of the rainy season (a great time to visit, by the way!), with no problems or complaints. We actually spent time (several afternoons) at the lodge reading, bird/animal watching from our balcony, and relaxing - totally unlike most of our vacations. A lovely place to stay that we highly recommend!

Best hotel stay ever!Posted Jun 10, 2013 on Hotels.com
Cala Lodge in Monteverde was wonderful! The location is secluded yet near everything you want to do in the area. The view from our room was amazing overlooking the cloud forest. We saw more birds from the outside patio while eating breakfast than we did in any of the reserves. Francisco, the owner, was an wonderful help. He was a great resource with all our planning, and knew about all the animals, birds, and the surroundings. With all my world traveling the Cala Lodge was one of my best hotel stays ever!
