Nice hotel, fantastic view, staff.. could improve.

Posted Jan 16, 2015
Pros: Facilities and amenities are good. the view is fantastic.
Cons: Staff at the bar \ restaurant don't seem to care much for what they do. Poor service, had to go look for coffee everyday at breakfast.
Location: Walk on the cloudforest (Reserva Monteverde), Pizza Tramonti, and avoid the restaurants in the "golden block" downtown.. overpriced and commercial.
Overall it's a good hotel. Had a very nice view of the Golfo de Nicoya, the rooms were clean & comfortable. I guess it's because of the way they are designed, and the floor type on the hallway, you can hear other guests dragging their luggage at 5 am from your room, or slamming their doors... somewhat noisy.

beautiful hotel in the cloud forest.

Posted Dec 30, 2014
Pros: Loved everything !
Location: The hotel has it's own hiking trails as well as access to all the other activities in the national park nearby.
This was a highlite for our trip to Costa Rica. Not only is the facility beautiful the on site restaurant was excellent and the breakfast, which was included, was great. The naturalist on staff went out of his way to show us best of the flora and fauna in the forest.

Good hotel with good views.

Posted Dec 29, 2014
Pros: good views, quick shuttle service, reasonable breakfast, like treetop canopy service
Cons: front desk, room temperature control, wifi services
It is a quite large hotel with few different buildings. The views are good. However, it is quite a bit of walk to front desk and registrations and have to call shuttle for transportation, which is free. The rooms are good size, but lack some basic stuff. There was no airconditioner/heating. There was an open space above the door to lobby with just nets for ventilation. Intially I liked it as we can get fresh air from outside at night as temperature outside was pleasant. However, there is significant noice from outside from shuttle buses and cars going back and forth at night that disturbs your sleep. Bathrooms also lacked some basic stuff like no toilet paper holder. Water was mostly cold except few minutes in the morning. Internet was very poor. They have designated their restaurants as wifi zone but it rarely worked. Actually wifi did work in my room in early mornings. Breakfast in the morning is free and reasonable. Travel desk is good. Location is good, close to the downtown, good walk downhill, but difficult walk coming back. Taxi charges around $3 to bring you back to hotel from downtown. Check in/out desk are not very friendly. During my checkout, I had some charges put on my room which I paid during checkout. I just asked the personell to give me receipt of what charges were made to the room, just wanted to make sure they were right charges but he got quite upset as I asked him details of charges made.

Nice view from the balcony.

Posted Dec 22, 2014
Pros: The view.
Cons: Carpeting, ventilation, Wi-Fi
Location: You either need a taxi or a car. Not much near walking distance.
The rooms are nice but need work. The carpets are warn and do not look very good. The only way to get ventilation through the room is through small jealousy windows in the bathroom and one over the door leading out to the balcony. On hot days this was not enough. The door leading to the balcony needed to have the weather-stripping replaced. I found an scorpion in our room that had crawled in below the door. The hotel advertises free Wi-Fi which is true but only in certain places on the property. There is no Wi-Fi available in the rooms.

EntornĂ³ muy especial, gran concepto, aunque le falta un poco de calor, de detalles. Personal no amable, algo raro en Costa Rica

El Establo, Monteverde

Posted Dec 7, 2014
Pros: rooms were very well appointed
Cons: staff, wi-fi, transport around the site
Location: About a 10 minute walk into the town of St Elena along steep, dark roads. OK if you are young and fit. Lots of wildlife, nature tours, zip-wiring.
What they provided was excellent - it's what they didn't provide that spoilt the experience a little. Like friendly, helpful staff. Or wi-fi where you needed it, in your room rather half a mile down a steep hill in the reception or breakfast blocks. Or shower gel/soap/shampoo. Or a regular shuttle bus service around the grounds rather than having to call up each time you needed to get to or from the reception or breakfast blocks.

Nice location, basic rooms

Posted Dec 1, 2014
Pros: Breakfast, pool
Cons: Coffee/Tea maker in room.
Location: Ziplining,
Stayed here for 2 nights in a room with 2 queen beds. The location is great. Good views from top of hill where the hotel road ends. The breakfast spread was good as well. The room itself was pretty basic but spacious enough. No coffee or tea maker in the room. The building our rooms were in (rooms 5XX) was a bit dated. They had plenty of suites available which we were willing to upgrade to during checkin but they asked for rates much higher than what Expedia was quoting which was a bit disappointing. The pool was fun for the kids and well maintained. Monterverde is a lovely place and the drive is scenic but driving through unpaved roads for several hours to access this town was probably not worth it for us since we also had Arenal and Manuel Antonio on our itinerary.
