Decent Hotel

Posted Jan 3, 2014 on Hotels.com
Hotel is located in a colder mountainous region of Costa Rica, the rooms get pretty cold as night and there is not heating in the hotel rooms. Breakfast is complimentary, but it doesn't change a bit from day to day. We stayed 5 mornings and by the 3rd we got very tired of the breakfast. Hotel staff are not incredibly friendly or helpful. WiFi is only accessible really from the Lobby, it is very spotty from your room. Even though Hotels.com lists Arenal and La Fortuna as accessible from this hotel, these locations are not reasonably accessible. As the crow flies, distance is 20 KM roughly, but the road you have to take to these areas goes around the Monte Verde Reserve, not through it, so the distance goes to 100 KM to see these attractions. Further, roads are not paved for part of the way which makes for slower driving.

Nice stay @ Trapp

Posted Dec 15, 2013 on Hotels.com
Room was clean, location was close to everything as long as you have an SUV (all roads are dirt in the area), and the staff was super friendly and helpful. Our room was up on a hill, which was enough to think twice if you forgot something when eating breakfast. But if you can't handle a little hill, you're probably not supposed to be in Monteverde, as it's a trekking place. Lobby/dining area is quite modern and very nice views. Hotel is a bit rustic, but a great value.

Close to Reserve

Posted Dec 2, 2013 on Hotels.com
The hotel was close to the reserve. The parking was convenient. My only issue was that there is no heat in the main building rooms and we were in the basement. The staff did bring us a space heater which helped. I would stay here again if in the area. The staff were very helpful with planning things to do.

Monteverde Cloud Forest, very remote

Posted Nov 20, 2013 on Hotels.com
My wife and I enjoyed our stay at the Trapp Family Lodge. The roads leading up to the Monteverde Cloud Forest are dirt/gravel/rock and in terrible shape, but the destination is worth the ride up. Our room was much nicer than I expected (A/C would be an improvement) and the breakfast was excellent. The Staff helped us with tours and directions. I would recommend this Lodge to anyone going to the Monteverde area of Costa Rica.
